I have a icebook 500/320. Today while using OSX.1.2, I restarted in OS9.2 to play Unreal tour. On startup, I got a ? on the folder. Nothing could change this. Had to ultimaetly reinstall from the restore CDs that came with the computer a year ago. Needless to say everything that was new is old again.
I may be going to the Apple store tomorrow in Chicago. Should I take my iBook and bitch? I have Apple care. I already lost everything on my HD including all the updates to 9 and 10 (including iPhoto hell downloading)
Should my HD be replaced? It seems fine now, but who knows. I almost hate putting everything back on it. Nothing ever seems to work for very long anymore.

I unplugged the unit and left it for a while, came back and managed to boot up from the OS 9 disk, from whence I reinstalled. But, the point is, the symptions are the same as yours exactly on icebook/cd/500 with 320 ram (my icebook is the newer one with the 15 gig drive).
Due to my quasi-religious backup practices, I did not lose much, but, as you say, reinstalling everything and putting my settings back in, etc was a pain for sure. If I was not so paranoid about backup, I could have lost a lot of work and for no reason that I can see. Disturbing...

I wouldn't send my ibook off for any service if I were you. The blinking "?" is more than likely a software issue. I don't t think Apple Care covers data loss. I would ask them at the Apple Store if they have a free copy of the OS upgrades they released for free on CD for you. Better yet, take your ibook in to the Mac Genuis and ask them to connect your ibook to their fat-broadband internet connection and run Software Update in both OSX & 9 for you. Say that you're going to check out the ipod while he does that and that you just got a new visa card in the mail. He'll be sure to hook you up.
p.s. - It probably wouldn't hurt if you bought the ipod before you asked too. Good Luck

This happened on my iMac/350 last november. You shouldn't automatically re-install the OS. There are other options.
First, you can boot off the OS 9 CD and run Disk First Aid on the Hard Drive, even if you're running OS X. This usually fixes the problems. A lot of times the partition may forget which to use or some system files may have gotten moved. This is what fixed my iMac. I lost no data.
Also, there are some other commercial disk tools out there. You may want to invest in those if you fear this will happen again. Also, make backups of important files.
