I can't decide whether or not to get Black and White! First, has it actually shipped yet, and seecond, is it worth getting for use on an iBook 500 under OSX? I'm not looking for 60fps or anything, just playable.
Thanks,
Will

No, there is no chance it will be in any way playable on a 500mhz G3 with an underclocked rage 128.

I agree, do not buy it. I do not like unsupporting Apple or Game companies, but the iBook 500 is a bad gaming machine, if you do not want to play 3d games.

I don't think that's a fair assessment for a game that hasn't even been released yet. Wait until it is out and go try it at the Apple Store. I wouldn't be surprised if it is playable.

I've played Black and WHite, it's a VERY graphicly intensive game, and for a computer that can barely play UT above 25 fps at 640 x 480, I have no reason to beleive it can be played on a 500mhz g3 with a 8 meg 5 year old vid card. The VRAM itself may not be enough, even.

I've seen it on high-end PC's, and it truly is a beautiful game. However, the graphics engine also scales very well, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was easily playable at lower detail settings on an iBook 500. The graphics chip is going to be the limitation, but it's got 8Mb... yeah, go try it at an Apple store is probably your best bet.
I'm guessing it will work. Not high-detail, but still beautiful. And it isn't a game where split-section reactions matter a lot.

Do you play a good god or something?
hehe, what I meant was that framerates in the 10-30 range (kinda what I'm expecting on an iMacDV 400) will still make the game playable...

Well, it was certainly playable on my machine. I got a copy from a friend (I have no idea where he managed to pick it up), and it seemed reasonable on my iBook 500. I didn't try to do extra-high detail, or anything, but what do you really expect?
I just OC'd my iBook to 600 MHz tonight, so maybe it'll be a bit faster now. I don't know how big a difference it will make, but the rest of the machine's response is definitely improved.

Otto Matic and Alice run pretty well on my 500 iBook at 640x480 w/ 16 bit.. I have 384 mb ram. Also, worked well while video mirroring to my TV (games are a lot funner on the TV).
However, there are some spots in Alice (like a fight) that it does get a tad choppy.. Maxing out the ram may help, however I do not have the money to try. An iBook isn't a gaming machine, but it does make an attempt.
