10.1.3 is a minor upgrade, unless you need some of those bug fixes and/or the device support they give. It should arrive anyday now.

My guess would be that if 10.2 is coming in the next few months, we won't see a 10.1.4.

Bollocks. No mention of the problems with QuickSilvers' lack of sound after sleep, or of crashing on going into sleep. Might these have been fixed in build between 5P48 and 5Q39?

Hold on, just typing those build numbers made me think about those pics of build 6B11 that were floating around before Christmas. Don't tell me the development has forked AGAIN?!

The 6xxx builds are for 10.2.
6B11 dates back to mid-December.
The most recent is around 6B33.

Nope no forking.

5B11 is a December 12 build. Given how fast builds were coming last year (summer), I wonder if the lower amount of builds has any significance? 22 builds since Decemeber 12.. It's probably kind of useless to try to read into this but maybe there is a reason?

Well it is slated to add more support to a number of burners, though it is not clear what kind of support that is.

Apple should not release the 10.1.3 update until the modem/PPP lockup bug is fixed. Enough is enough.

From what I hear (and the folks I hear it from usually know what they're talking about), the PPP bug is fixed in 10.1.3. Rejoice!

Not that I don't hope that is true, but it has not been mentioned so far in any documentation. Given how big a bug that is for a few people, I would think there would be some documentation.

Let us know if you hear otherwise.

Might bug 2801455 mentioned above be related to this problem? It might be, although it is not in the list ad dev/bugs. The usual bug report we've been watching is 2691330 (something like that) which at the moment is again missing.

I could be wrong, but I think the bugfix list above is just bugs fixed since the last 10.1.3 build. Meaning that that bug could have been addressed earler, and would therefore not be on that list.

Again, that's just what I surmised from reading that (relatively short) list of bugfixes...I could be way off-base.

It's a very long list of bugs to be fixed since the last build or last public release. Don't get your hopes up. 10.2 isn't that far off either, and some cevelopers have to work on new features for it.

That damn PPP hang on connect bug is worth a 10.1.x update of its own! I'm sick of waiting for Apple fix such a fundamental part of their OS, if it's not fixed by 10.1.3 I'm going to throw a sh!t-fit! Why is this taking so long? Name one other OS on the market that cannot establish a modem connection to the internet without freezing for 5-25 minutes....no, there is no other OS that is such a sorry heap of bug ridden code.

I even remember Apple selling iMacs with advertisements about how easy it is to get online. Remember, they showed a phone line plug and "there is no step three" or something like that? Bullsh!t, there is a step 3, "step 3: wait half an hour while OS X halts all system processes while it figures out how to use Apple's stock modem properly." That's step 3.

I love Macs but this bug is preposterous. If Windows had such a bug we would all be ragging on it and laughing our asses off, using it as an example of why Windows sucks so hard. Now it's a bug in OS X and Apple apologists even try to DEFEND such a bug, saying things like "most people don't use modems anyways". Oh man the veins on my forehead bulge where I hear that sort of nonsense.

That's gotta be a partial list of fixes - one of the planned improvements (that I'm desperately waiting for) is SSL support in Mail.app. If it works, I'll finally be able to get my AT&T Broadband e-mail from outside the AT&T network. Eudora *claims* to support SSL, but it just doesn't work properly!

So, when will we actually get OS X 10.1.3?

How about the weird mouse tracking acceleration curve... is that fixed? It was introduced with 10.1, I was hoping 10.1.1 then 10.1.2 would fix it... now 10.1.3 is my hope.

Anyone?
You have to wonder...

You can always use SSH port forwarding for a secure email connection, provided that your POP server allows it.

There's a good hint on this on http://www.macosxhints.com, although I had to adjust the script a bit to get it to work from my ScriptMenu pulldown. For some reason the sample code's environment variables weren't "sticking" when I ran it from the script menu, though it did from the terminal. Anyway, I changed it a bit and now it works great.

For what it's worth, I'll just include the script here. It's not foolproof or well-written but maybe someone else can improve it.

Pre-Step: Generate a SSH key-pair for your computer using ssh-keygen, and set up your public key on the POP server so you can SSH in w/out entering a password every time. To learn more about how to do this, type "man ssh" in the terminal.

Ok, once that's done...

Step one: create a file: SecurePOP, which goes in ~/Library/Scripts. It looks something like this.

<font face = "courier">
#!/bin/csh

# First, kill any previous SSH forwarding connection.
# I do this because on my powerbook I may have an old forwarding process
# running that needs to be killed, like if my laptop were sleeping and
# I wake it up, I'd need to kill the old SSH process before starting a
# new one.

# (This line could absolutely be improved to be "smarter")

kill -9 `ps -auxww | grep "ssh -2 -C -f -N" | grep -v grep | grep $LOGNAME | awk '{print $2}'`

# Start a new ssh tunnel (forward remote server's port 110 to my port 1110)

nohup ssh -2 -C -f -N -L 1110 op.mypopserver.com:110 pop.myserver.com;

# Finally, launch the Mail app.
open /Applications/Mail.app;
</font>

Step 2: Download Scriptmenu.menu from http://www.apple.com/applescript/macosx/script_menu/ and drag it into your menu bar. Scriptmenu.menu lets you run various types of scripts (Applescripts, Shell Scripts, Perl, etc.) by simply choosing it from the menu. It's pretty neat.

Step 3. Edit your account settings in mail.app to check your mail at Host Name "localhost" (which is your own machine). Then hit the Account Options tab and set the port to 1100 instead of 110.

You're done setting it up.

Now run SecurePOP from the pulldown menu. A fresh SSH port-forwarded link should be established and mail.app should run.

Check your mail via the encrypted connection.

That's it

W

PS-- Doing secure SMTP (ie, SENDing mail rather than checking) is tougher because mail.app won't let you specify a port other than the built-in 25. To do the same port-forwarding stuff, you'd have to port-forward to port 25 on your own machine, and that requires root access, which is a pain.

Crap-- a clarification in the above script:

<font face = "courier">
nohup ssh -2 -C -f -N -L 1110 op.mypopserver.com:110 pop.myserver.com;
</font>

you should use the SAME server for "pop.mypopserver.com" and "pop.myserver.com" above. I meant to type "pop.mypopserver.com" twice but forgot the "pop" in the second one.

like this:

<font face = "courier">
nohup ssh -2 -C -f -N -L 1110 op.mypopserver.com:110 pop.mypopserver.com;
</font>

So, in other words, just put your pop server address in both spaces.

SSH != SSL. So, no, the server does not support it. Still waiting... (which is annoying, because Outlook Express on Windows can do it just fine)

This isn't a case of "I want to do this to be secure", it's a case of "AT&T doesn't let clients connect from outside its own network without SSL-enabled connections". Their way or the highway (at least they have a way - @home didn't!).

Does anyone know what's happening with the next OS update? Do you think it has just been pushed back so that the next one is 10.2 sometime in March?

you can tunnel your connection via SSH (which here use (aka compiled with) OpenSSL (which is an SSL implementation) which encrypt stuff

of course you can have direct pop3-sslized connections which is easier
but in fact it's some proof that as long as there is ssh you can crypt almost any common server (almost

I think Apple will not release this update, and wait until 10.2.

Name one other OS on the market that cannot establish a modem connection to the internet without freezing for 5-25 minutes....no, there is no other OS that is such a sorry heap of bug ridden code. </STRONG>
I had the opportunity to use the modem in my TiBook for the first time a few weeks ago. Normally I just use a wireless connection, but I was in a place where I had to dial up.

I noticed the computer freeze up for 15-20 seconds while it connected via PPP. I shrugged and thought to myself "Is this the freeze problem people are bitching about?"

It isn't pretty, but it isn't all that bad.

As for the bug list, yes, it is since the last build, not an all-inclusive list.

The problem is more uptime generally == longer wait. You start off with no wait then 20 secs then 2 mins then 5 mins etc etc.

Not the first time, not the second time. After a week you begin gnawing on the keyboard. After two you wonder how hard it could be to mix up some anthrax to send Apple's QA. After three you begin to feel like Michel Douglas in "Falling Down". After four that Dell with Win2K looks almost usable.

The bug can take as much as a minute if you're out of luck. That's longer than my iMac takes to boot into OS 9. Imagine having to reboot everytime you want to check mail. Thank God I finally got a cable modem.

OK, cool. Do you (or anyone else) have a list of other bugs fixed?
The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

Ive had my machine freeze up for 15minutes and the next time it will only lock for 5. Its weird, but yes, this is what we're bitching about.

Stunnel will help you, if you can handle compiling it. And there's a port in the Fink project already done. This should tide you over until Mail.app supports SSL directly.

Now wait a minute - maybe I am completely wrong, but I thought that SSL was Secure Sockets Layer, which is a medium for encrypting internet traffic (over any protocol, port, etc), whereas SSH was a protocol with a defined port, etc, that happens to have the cool ability of tunnelling. Pumping my e-mail connection through an SSH tunnel is not the same as having SSL support, AFAIK, and I don't think the AT&T server on the other end with understand what the hell I'm doing if I try SSH.

Anyone want to shed more light on that?
