I wrote an Applescript to do some file recovery. The problem is that it will take about 50 hours to go through a 800MB file byte by byte.
Should I be looking into shell scripts?
Please help!

What happened: HD with some bad spots generating i/o errors, so can't just copy file.
What I did: Make new file. Copy damaged file into new file one byte at a time, First starting at the top (crashing at the point of error) and then from the back (to said point). It works but will take ages.

Maybe someone has written this (better than I did) already?

PS. Yes, I saved as application bundle for Intel cpu.
