While we're at it, if someone wants to PM me who he really is, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't curious.

I can keep a secret. Just ask I'm not going to tell you.

I can only assume that this was the kind of attention you wanted - you made it clear from each of your posts that you've been here before.

You assumed wrong - It was not a conscious effort, and I really don't appreciate your underlying tone of accusation and ill will - so kindly back off and allow me to participate in these forums drama free, if you don't mind!

That is exactly the wrong way to approach Laminar. It seems you're purposely trying to start something with that.

You can remove the "Laminar".

If that was aimed at me I'd translate it to "come at me, bro".

So either I prove him right by getting grumpy about it, or I prove him "wrong" and stay quiet. Win-win for him?

If what happened was a username was changed to prevent further drama, I'd say there's already been a loss marked on the books.

I'm cool with it. Thread could use a palate cleanser before the next round.

Which will be me figuring out how to record a string trio in a room which isn't really big enough for a single instrument.

Now the Mojaves, I guess appropriately enough, have bitten me. There's some intermittent interference going on somewhere between (I hope only) one of the mics, and the power supply. Big pisser, and is going to be a bitch to isolate.

My instincts tell me it's between pins and cable. They use 7 pins.

T-minus 10 hours to recording the string trio. This is going to suck, and it's made worse by not being able to trust the Mojaves. The SDCs are giving me a little trouble too. Certain notes on the violin were resonating a whole lot louder than others. My only thought there, other than the room sucking, is it's too close, which is because the room sucks.

My idea at the moment is have an SDC and an LDC acting as "overheads". I can mic up the f-hole of the bass with the u47FET clone. LDC at the bridge of the cello. Another LDC "at" the violin. One or two of the pickups, depending on how shitty they sound.

I'd like to use the Mojaves, but that will come down to how much time we have to allow them to bite us in the ass. I'm bringing the u87s and the Manley Reference Cardioid for LDCs. I'd like to try others, but these we've already tested. Haven't tested other SDCs, and the Mojaves are the only tube SDCs I have, not to mention the only ones I have with capsules not meant for location recording. If location recording in this particular location was what I was doing, I'd pick the Schoeps, so I guess I might as well do the same for this.

May not be the Mojaves. Heard the same sound without any Mojaves plugged in.

The SDC had a hum from out of nowhere though. Glad I brought the Schoeps.

Didn't suck quite as much as I thought it would, but it took me about an hour to mic everything.

It was a little crowded, too...

Those issues sound like feedback. Too much happening in too little space.

I think you need a bigger room, or go back to recording dreams. A few recliners should fit ok. When do the helmets arrive?

I think the room treatment ship has already sailed...

Recording has been put on hold for two weeks until the first show has shown.

I actually canceled a recording session to work on lighting and costumes. Felt totally weird to do that, but that's pretty unquestionably the way to go. Didn't get any flack for it, at least.

If you have a hum somewhere, the first item to check is that ALL audio lines' shields are intact and correctly wired. An unshielded mic line (even if it's not connected to a mic) WILL hum. So will a line between a mixer and an amp. After that, internal feedback is a possible culprit.

You may be able to isolate the hum by starting with all the inputs turned all the way down and seeing if the hum goes away. If it does, start turning up one input channel (not just the ones you're using) at a time until you hear the hum again. Now you know which channel is giving you a problem.

Disconnect all input cables to that channel and see if it goes away - the one you disconnect that takes away the hum is the bad cable. If removing the cables doesn't fix it, the hum is either a shield problem within a device or an internal amplifier problem, maybe even a preamp in a mixer. The final fix for that is to repair the component, but if you have spare channels then don't use the bad one and get your sessions recorded, then look into it.

You know, I wish my proper troubleshooting habits would kick in when problems like this occur. Nine times out of ten I feel so under the gun, my impulse is solve the problem rather than fix the problem, if you get the distinction.

In this case, I threw in the Schoeps. Solved, yet not fixed.

A ridiculous one. Full-on, 100 pounds worth of coiled copper, 20 amp isolation transformer. Everything is on that circuit, so I'm doubtful it's a ground loop.

Even though I've waited more than a year, time to call it quits on the rebuilt Telefunken V78s. Guy making them has fallen off the face of the earth.

Refund is forthcoming, but it's still something of a letdown.

I'm not there, so I don't have all the details, but we just got nailed by a huge storm, and I'm guessing the sump pump died. The flooding was noticed because a floor lamp was flickering, so I said it was best to stay out of the water.

It doesn't sound like it got very deep, so I'm hopeful I have everything high enough off the ground, but we're going to have humidity. Condensers just love humidity.

I also realized, bet you dollars to donuts my acoustic panels are ****ed.

Things could have been much worse. The racks are on dollies, so those had enough height. The chrome shelves have a few inches of post before the shelves begin. It was a little close with the computer shelf, but luckily the uneven floor worked to my advantage this time, and the slant kept the water away.

My instincts to keep all the important electrical off the floor in some way paid dividends too.

Acoustic panels are pretty hosed. I'll use them until the studio gets broken down, which is September 1st at the latest. I'll need to make a couple new ones for the ones at head level, otherwise stinky mold at head level. I could also conceivably vinegar the **** out of them, but we have 40 days and 40 nights of rain in the forecast. These won't really dry properly unless I can get them outside.

Spray them with Kilz, then a clear acrylic. No mold can survive that.

Does the studio have an air conditioner? If so, turn it on low and leave it a day or two. It will finish drying everything out.
