What to do when this happens:

I cannot repair my disk since the verification fails with an errors.
My HD is *new*, yet sometimes my computer will hang for like 30 minutes, and the disk seems to be trying to access something and failing repeatedly. This whole thing brings my machine down and makes me way less productive. It's starting to happen frequently.

Do I need tech tool pro?

How "new" is your disc? I've had a number of "new" hard drives report as failing and malfunction out of the box.

like 2 months new.

it's a hitachi high performance 7200 HD...

running techtool is a pain because it tries to access the drive, but it's ****ing slow and the tests look like they're going to take 1+ day to complete.

Well I'd instinctively say that your drive is failing or badly corrupted. Backup and format it and if it's still performing badly, replace the drive.

Actually, there's a bug/error with Disk Utility that's preventing it from completing the scan/repair. Not necessarily related to a hardware drive error.

I know I've seen posts, either here or macosxhints.com or something like that on how to fix the error. Its something like a corrupted plist file... just can't recall.

However, all you'll need to do is boot from your install CD/DVD that came with your machine and run Disk Utility from there. That'll allow you to complete the scan and repair errors.

Hell, no. Your HD is nearly completely dead. Get it backed up. Now.

Ambush, you should use a MUCH better title for a thread-especially since you know there's been a lot of discussion over such undescriptive titles...

Anyway, is there even a remote possiblity that the drive has lost part of its connection-that a cable has slipped just a bit? That can cause all sorts of gooberage. I'm assuming you installed the drive; if not, can you contact whomever did and get them to address the problem?

Most of the time the drive just performs perfectly and fast you know.

In rare and totally random occasions, it will start hanging and churning every 2 seconds. The computer will slow to a halt and I either wait 15 minutes (or more) or restart it.

Techtool pro's Surface Test failed with -4. It said 66 bad sectors.

Damn, I don't want to backup & format.

You don't need to backup and format.

You need to backup and get a new drive. Run--don't walk--to do this.

Ambush, you're a long-time member, you should know better but to use this kind of thread title. Then, most likely your disk is broken (as in hardware defect) and as such no OS X problem.

So repost this thread with a suitable title in the appropriate section, do a backup NOW and go out and get a new drive.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.
