Scary

Police found a large stash of weapons and explosives yesterday after an investigation of a suspicious minivan tied up traffic through downtown streets for several hours.

Montreal police sent in a robot to examine several pieces of luggage after SWAT team members in full protective gear investigated the vehicle.

They seized about 15 firearms, including automatic weapons like machine guns, and also found 90-135 kilograms of explosives.

"The only good news is that the explosives and the detonators were not connected so it could not explode," said police spokesman Miguel Alston.

Police couldn't say what type of explosives were involved, or who they belonged to. "We cannot confirm any organization at this point," said Alston.

Police had been warned about the vehicle carrying commercial Quebec licence plates from a source, but didn't receive a call through 911

The good news is that our law enforcement is continuing to be successful in catching this type of crime.

It's well known that terrorists come through Canada to the united states... so who knows what the target was. I'm glad they got them early as I would bet they thought they would have more time to cover their tracks.

Can you prove they ALL came through Canada?

There is a difference between "well known" (rumors and gossip) and "well known" (statistical data).

as my woman's cousin is a border patrol office here in detroit, i know from his stats that a day doesn't go by they don't bust someone for illegal arms/explosives. now, before everyone thinks the sky is falling...

most are not of the type in the above article and don't warrant coverage. thinks like a single gun or fireworks. however, busts of known smuglers and terrorists happen often, more than what makes the news. this is first hand knowledge passed to me and the woman. take it for what it is worth.

but what is good is, they are catching them.

also of note...

the amount has not increased since 9/11. there is a monthly average they catch...and it has neither increased/decreased significantly in the past 15 years.

montreal is well known for it's organized crime which often turns to turf wars.

there are all the underworld peeps as anywhere in north america. the asian gangs, the

'mafia' etc.

the biggest groups doing battle for the last decade have been the 'biker gangs'.

'hell's angel's' have been battling the rival 'the rock machine' for control of illegal and

legal stuffs in quebec and ontario. hits are not uncommon including car bombings

and such. these are not your pussy american biker gangs. these guys are cold killers

and news reporters and police have been targets.

also the biggest mafia boss in montreal was just buried so i suspect these

are the connections with this van and not bin laden.

This is not that uncommon. Illegal weapons crop up everywhere. We have a lot of gangs all over canada and the police haven't been able to stem them. Plus all their subsidiaries and street gangs. So its not exactly shocking that there are a lot of busts of weapons, explosives, and drugs.

I agree with you TheBadgerHunter.

The issue I raised was from a report I got (which I cannot find anymore) that said that it was the biggest take of weapons in Montreal. As many reporters reports, the early ones are always more dramatic and exagerated ( we saw that in a hostage situation downtown Toronto yesterday where they announced that one woman had been shot dead, which was found to be erroneous).

Of course there is organized crime in Montreal. It has been so for the last hundred years. Of course the Biker gangs have a lot of fun in that province. There is no denying that! And drugs and weapons are there for the trading. Some First Nations groups are involved and it is possible that the network of casinos may be under relative control of those gangs.

It is also clear that some politicians were involved in funny deals.

But that is true for the whole country. Quebec is not pure, and neither is the rest of Canada.

Check out this one: Montreal man downed US Plane
A captured al-Qaeda operative has told Canadian intelligence investigators that a Montreal man who trained in Afghanistan alongside the 9/11 hijackers was responsible for the crash of an American Airlines flight in New York three years ago.

Canadian Security Intelligence Service agents were told during five days of interviews with the source that Abderraouf Jdey, a Canadian citizen also known as Farouk the Tunisian, had downed the plane with explosives on Nov. 12, 2001.

The source claimed Jdey had used his Canadian passport to board Flight 587 and "conducted a suicide mission" with a small bomb similar to the one used by convicted shoe bomber Richard Reid
This plane went down shortly after 9/11, but US officials "claimed" the plane's tail fell off.
