Nothing specific to this particular model of monitor, but popping is generally not a good sign with electronics. I would keep it unplugged until I could get it to a repair shop.
Is there any smoke? Do you smell any burnt plastic?

Same thing happened to the monitor that came with my Beige G3. It started the popping thing and then one day got a HUGE pop and the monitor was no more.

That was the second monitor I'd purchased from Apple that died on me. I never purchased a CRT from them again.

That sounds like a leak in the high voltage circuit. Now you know why they were selling it.

My Apple 17" CRT B&W is almost 5 years old, no pops (fingers crossed), but REMEMBER, NEVER OPEN THE MONITOR.
