I am considering purchasing the new 17 inch Intel iMac. Is AppleCare necessary? I've had my Powerbook for three years and never needed to use it. I'd rather use the $250 for AppleCare elsewhere. Any thoughts?

Fixing the screen alone would cost you a cool grand. I'd recommend it.

Yes, I think the $169 for iMac Applecare is a pretty good deal.

Some places might have it a little cheaper too. Small Dog has it for $149: http://www.smalldog.com/product/43153

I bought Applecare with my new 20 inch Intel iMac. Seeing as how it has that huge expensive screen built in and it isn't very user serviceable friendly I thought the AC was worth the cost.

I never normally buy extended warranties but have heard good things about Applecare.
