Pretty self explanatory, I think!

Okay, I know I left out a "Laptop" option but the question really relates to whether when buying a desktop machine, you opted for an (expensive) Apple display or a third party device. I have provided the option for ticking more than one box though!

Wow, Feathers - long time.

Welcome back to the fray.

I use a Graphite Apple 17" CRT on the G4 (the old-school graphite version of the smurf design), and a whole assortment of third party CRTs on the other machines... including an original old IBM that shipped with a PS/2 76.

I just use the built-in LCD on my iBook, no external.

Unfortunately, my 17" Graphite is starting to pop, so I may need a new monitor very soon... and I'm considering an LCD for the sake of my eyes (though I hate them... argh).

Probably the same reasons as me... although I don't really HATE LCDs, I just don't think their advantages over CRTs are worth the price, especially given their numerous disadvantages.

They're sharper, easier on the eyes, and better for text. However, they have very poor contrast and color saturation compared to CRTs. They're getting better for sure - I used an older LCD a few days ago and it was far, far worse than the ones today. But they're still not as bright or contrasty as CRTs. If they cost the exact same as CRTs, maybe they'd be worth it, but they're a lot more expensive so I'll pass.

I use an NEC FE791SB, a 17" CRT, running at 1280x960 @ 85 Hz. It's a nice monitor but I'm feeling a bit cramped by it so I ordered an IBM C190 refurbished (thanks to Lateralus for pointing me to the $150 refurb deal!). I should be able to bump up the resolution a little on the new 19". At the very least it'll be more comfortable, even if I don't run it at a higher resolution.

Same reasons I am still using a CRT. LCD just isn't there yet. Esp for the price.

Those are sweet things (I specced one for the old man). Pain in the butt doing the config on them though (one of two reasons why I like TFTs - the other being space and weight).

I got a huge (both in screen size and footprint)Sony Trinitron 21" CRT. Thinking of geting a decent 19" 1600x1200 LCD when the prices come down.

Nope, not this time.

While an interesting thread, I would think there's going to be a very high number of PowerBook and iBook users who can't vote.

Powermac > Viewsonic 19" G90fb CRT
Pismo > laptop screen > JVC 32" TV

No LCD's for me, until I am able to get the 30" one that apple has.

LCD's used to have crappy latency, I hear that's been improving alot.

Can't do critical color work on LCDs. I've gone all LaCie Electron Blue 19" for all my machines, except the Powerbook.

That's kind of the point. I was interested in desktop display choice. The ole' CRT vs LCD debate and Apple vs third parties.

Sony HMD-A220 17" CRT

At the time I bought my G4, the Apple options were the 17" CRT with the clear back and the moebus (sp?) loop base which was a bit over my budget, or a flat screen which was way over my budget. I went for the Sony because it was silver, like my G4 .

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

There's no such thing. All 19" LCDs are 1280x1024. If you want 1600x1200 you have to go 20". Dell actually makes a pair of really nice 20" LCDs, the 2001FP (1600x1200) and the 2005FPW (1680x1050). The 2001FP is sometimes on sale for as little as $599, which is an EXCELLENT deal. That's not too much more expensive than a high quality 21" CRT.

I love it when people say they need *PERFECT* color to work with a cheap camera and a 20 year old printer for a newspaper that has a userbase of less than 50k.

I've got a 22" cinema display. -- used to have a trinitron and a few regular boob-tubes before that, pretty much all but 2 are gone now because they were wearing out, the good one my bro has and the crap 14" is on my p166 box.

No other monitors

I don't know how true it is, since I've never really had an LCD, besides the one I use on my powerbook, but I've heard alot about certain LCD's not being fast enough for games, if one is particularly picky.

No, it's in my apartment. I am currently working on making aluminum panels to cover up the gaps. I bought some 1/8" thick aluminum sheet and I am machining it to cover the gaps. I'm going to add blinky LED's and switches to make it look really cool.

Sweet and neat!

I also notice that a lot of the Non-Apple displays (CRT & LCD) are NEC/Mitsubishi bearing in mind that Formac and LaCie also use NEC tubes. Those DiamondTrons are bright!
