I have an iPod 30 gig w/ dock; My wife has a iPod Mini; her Mini works fine; when I plug mine into the computer (whether from the dock or straight into minus the dock), iTunes opens, my iPod shows up, and ... holy ghost, Batman! iTunes shuts down, disappears. GRRR!

Unplug everything, quit iTunes. Do a search (apple F) for iTunes. Trash the plist. Empty trash and reopen iTunes. Get things set again and re-hook up the iPod and see if that works.
Also, use the iPod Software Updater so both iPods are up-to-date.

Thanks, Randman, I'll try that as soon as I get home tonight ... and thanks for your prompt response!

I had that same exact problem a little while ago. Reinstalling the iPod software with iPod Updater fixed it.
