Hi,

I'm finding myself working around 28 hours a day and too many hours to count per week. I'm not a casual gamer. I don't play games at all to be honest. At least I haven't touched a game for over 5 years. And now I'm wondering ... is there a game any of you can recommend to a non-gamer? I dislike Ego-shooters (well, except a game called Police Squat or something similar I played many moons ago). I'm not hot for "war games" either though I did enjoy the first version of Commandos (was it called that?). I am also not keen on Sims (it got boring after the first two hours). Science fiction games are the worst of all for me.

With all these restrictions, is there a game that you have played that you would recommend to someone who is not a fan of ego-shooters, war games, sci-fi and cheesy stuff such as the Sims?

As a hint, I enjoyed Gabriel Knight II (horribly old game I know) and I also quite enjoyed Broken Sword.

I'd like to play half an hour or so every now and then when I need to distract myself from work.

Merci!

Are you living on some planet that has a slower rotation than the Earth's?

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

No. I thought more of adventure games. I remember a time when it was not uncommon that a few real actors were part of game sequences. I liked a few of those, like for example Gabriel Knight II or Black Dahlia. I don't think these kind of games are produced anymore. I was thinking there was somthing similar today perhaps, most likely 3d adventure games of that kind. I thought maybe someone here knows such a game could recommend them. Maybe I'll do a google search to see what options there are.

Thanks.

You are spot on with "7th Guest"! Very cool. Never heard of it but I just did a Google Search and it seems like I can purchase a copy. Might be able to run that on Windows via my Mac.

Thanks a ton.

Edit: I also found a nice website that has some more classic games that claim to be compatible with Windows XP: Classic Gaming Presents

Wow I didn't think you could still find 7th guest. I remember playing that back when OS 7.5 was out. 11th hour is the sequel to it if you can find it as well. Maybe try out some of the crime/drama games like CSI or Law and Order. Based off the tv shows, I don't know if you have those shows over in Germany.

7th guest was fun, lots of puzzles etc. I remember being glad that my LCIII would play its specs. 68030 processor REQUIRED! Perhaps it would run in classic?

An RPG might be good for you... have you looked at Baldur's Gate series or Neverwinter Nights?

Did you already play the Tex Murphy series? I recommend Under A Killing Moon. You could probably play it with DOS Box or something even. It came on an outrageous 7 CD-ROMs back in the days.

Too bad no one does FMV games anymore. They were awesome. (I'm glad to see C&C return to FMV though, even if it's limited to intros).

Thank you Erik. I have never heard of those either. World of Warcraft does not sound like a game I'd like but I'll check out your other recommendations.

Yeah, but not once in a while - isn't it a full time job?

It can be. There's a lot of content in the game that can be done 'casually' and it doesn't have to be a complete time sink.

And no, not *everyone* likes WoW. But it does a lot of things right, so even if you don't like MMOs it can be a lot of fun.

Download SimCity 2000 for Mac - SimCity - Softpedia

That's fun and relaxing at the same time. And it's freeware!

Chess is a nice game to play online. You can play a 5, 10, 15, or a 30 minute game whichever you like. One place to hang out is Chesspark.

You should try Civilization IV.

No, it's not a good game to play "every once and a while." But if you start playing it then none of those things that take up all your time will matter anymore.

I recently bought my first civ-building game for my Windows machine. The now-10-years-old Age Of Empires cost all of 10 bucks at Walmart, and it has been lots of fun. I'm not really into sci-fi stuff so the historical skew of the scenarios is quite interesting to me.

It's disappointing that Civ4 requires a G5 1.8 minimum...

If you liked the old Lucasarts games, you can still run them in a virtual machine on many platforms - ScummVM :: Home
