Aim just spontaneously signed me off and refuses to sign on. Anyone else having this problem?

Maybe it is your ISP connection.

Yeah, I just had the same problem from home. I doubt that it was your ISP. It was probably just the AIM servers getting overloaded. It's frustrating, but it happens. AOL products have scalability requirements that would make your head spin. We're talking millions and millions of simultaneous users around the world.

I have lots of issues with the interaction, UI design, stability, and evil banner ads... but all things being equal, I think we need to keep in mind that this is a "free service", and not a shrinked wrap product like Photoshop. I'm also happy they released an Mac OS X version of the app quickly.

Those who think AIM is a piece of poo are invited to go out and build their own app and network of users. Nobody's stopping you. AOL needs constructive feedback from us Mac users. They need to know we're interested -- and not sulking in a corner somewhere whining about how much it sucks.

There is a VERY easy workaround for the bold menu bug in classic AIM

When you run into the bug, simply go to software update, click update now, then click cancel, and.. boom! fixed.

Ya those bastards. I am going to call them and demand my money back. Not to mention all the monthly subscription fee's they have been charging me. I don't think it is worth talking to countless people around the world for free or easily transferring files when the fonts in the menu bar occasionally turn bold.

While I am at it I might at well ask for $5000 back from Apple as my Mac crashes sometimes.

Good point, disgruntled robot head.

We don't pay anything for it. Well, we do "pay" the occasional glance at the ad atop our buddy list window, but we don't really click on them do we?

I think we, not just Mac users, but all of us, pay by virtue of AOL's dominance of the ISP market. AIM is the tip of a very very large iceberg.

Heh. Heh. Heh. Agreed. Totally.

But I happen to work there (well, at least at their Netscape campus) and trust me, I've been relentlessly chipping away and pointing out every lame thing they do. I guess you could call my job function "how to make their products suck less" and though I haven't changed the world, I do have some success stories to tell -- especially with their community products.

Here's some trivia: The main AIM integration guru here is a hard core Mac head who's permanently glued to his PowerBook. He's a true Mac Jedi. There's tons of us in Mt. View -- we're all just not working on the AOL client, unfortunately.

I've been using AIM pretty much since the beginning.

It was then that I realized that AOL could be easily replaced by a much better ISP and the AIM software. With those two together, what did I need AOL for? To access my friends' profile?

It may not be perfect, but it's free, and it keeps me in touch with all my AOL-using friends. So I wouldn't bash it. Or they'll give up Mac support, like that VueScan guy.
