Hey Guys, so after playing with my brand spanking new 2008 dual 2.8 quad mac pro for the past week, it seems I have the sleep issue that everyone else is complaining about in other forums. Basically what happens when my computer goes to sleep, instead of waking up on keypress, it REBOOTS causing me to lose everything I had on the desktop. I have tried:

resetting the SMC
resetting the PRAM
reinstalling leopard
reinstalling on another drive
not using my UPS

and I still have the issue. Actually resetting the SMC/PRAM seems to help as it will prevent it from resetting a few times after, but eventually it seems to always come back, this I have done twice already! I am very disappointed in Apple quality control, and actually waited a very long time to get a Mac Pro because I wanted any weirdness and oddities to get worked out. Also from reading forums it seems that so many people have this issue that I don't understand how Apple quality control missed this problem. I ran into it within a few hours getting my Mac. As far as I have read there are 4 types of people who have the new 2008 MAC PRO:

1> The people who put their Mac Pro to sleep and have this issue
2> The people who Shutdown so never have the problem
3> The people who always leave their computer on and never have the problem
4> The people that put their Mac into deep sleep "hibernate" mode to work around the issue

Does anyone out there have the new 2008 Mac Pro and not have the "reboot after sleep" issue???
Also if anyone has any suggestions please throw them my way. I'm not sure if my only option is to wait for 10.5.2, or if it worth making an appointment to get my system checked out, which I'll do if there are people with properly sleeping 2008 mac pros. Thanks. TIA

The sleep issue I have encountered:

After hitting any key to wake>selecting an application from the dock opens the finder, not the app.

I have set my prefs to never sleep and unchecked sleep drives when possible.

I'm one of those who shuts down when I leave the house. After seeing an imac go up in smoke>flames> and then melt all over the desk at a friends house... I shut down and turn off the power strip.

10.5.1 is apparently bug laden. Lots of these things are supposed to addressed in 10.5.2 which is eminent... so I hear.

Yup, 10.5.1 is buggy. I have 12 OS bugs on report. the sleep bug would make 13 (for me). And these are all kinda severe - alike to the sleep bug(s).

Thanks for the responses, since I have yet to hear of someone NOT having the issue, I guess I'll save myself a trip to the apple store and will just keep my fingers crossed for 10.5.2. I have to say, aside from the sleep issue, I'm completely lovin' my mac pro. It really is hard going back to my MBPro 2.16 c2duo after using this thing.

I doubt it's the ram, Zach. There are too many of us with stock units having this problem.

This isn't a new problem. I have 3 MacPros from 2007, and a Quad G5 that all have sleep issues as well. The fan still wants to stay at "full blast" sometimes as well.

I'm not sure if I'm experiencing the exact same problem as you guys are, but I just started having a somewhat similar problem late last week in which I can't get it out of sleep mode. The only way I can get it back on is if I hold the power button down, shut it completely off, and then turn it back on. It doesn't always do this to me, it's only done it twice out of several times of putting it to sleep. Has anyone experienced that yet?

Yes, ditto on my less-than-week-old Mac Pro. It's happened on at least three occasions, but not on every sleep occasion, which I find odd. An extra 2GB of third-party RAM is installed.

Update to everyone... I sold the Apple 2x1Gig sticks on Ebay for $255, and replaced it with 2 more 2gig sticks for $230 from OWC, so now I have 8GB of OWC memory and no apple memory. I then reset the SMC, and did the PRAM reset.

So aside from getting more memory and 20 bux essentially for free, I haven't experienced the reboot on sleep issue I initially posted about!!!

Anyway... I will respond back to this thread if I have the issue again, but if i never do, then it means "so far, so good."

Sleep problems here, too.

Usually (not always) it will reboot upon wake from sleep. Once it came up with a blank screen and I had to manually force a reboot via the on-button.

It's quite frustrating and I certainly hope that 10.5.2 will fix this!

yeah, i don't think it was the ram just stating. I have also had the problem where I have to manually turn the comptuer off and then back on. Hopefully it gets fixed in 10.5.2

I still have the problem after 10.5.2, like others.

I agree that it is a very annoying issue. Apple should take care of this immediately. Their silence on these sorts of issues is quite shameful.

I don't have the issue anymore. I had it before but I did the PRAM/SMC(this was 3 weeks ago) thing and that fixed it for me. I have a 2.8Ghz single quad. I was running 10.5.1 when I did the fix. I'm now on 10.5.2 and everything is still fine. I have the sleep hard disks option checked and have no problems.

My re-boot from sleep issue (which I had from day one with my 2 x 4 x 2.8Ghz MacPro) was resolved by installing a new hard drive this weekend, with a fresh install of Leopard updated to 10.5.2. I installed all apps. from disc or download and migrated nothing from my G5.

I had originally migrated apps. and user data and have to believe that is what caused the issue; for me at least.

I purchased my computer Jan 22nd and became aware of problems within the first couple weeks. Early 2008 Mac Pro dual core quad 2.8, 320gb HD (added 4 seagate 1tb HD's), 2gb ram, (added 8gb.) I Also experienced the restart from sleep mode. In a addition the front panel firewire ports were not working. They would supply power, but would not recognize any hard drive, video camera or flash drive. USB ports were intermittent. After spending 3 hours with tech support, Level 2 tech had acknowledged that both were a known problem with this particular machines serial number, and assured me that a fix was available. After taking the computer and case number to a local Apple store a new machine was exchanged without question... to note, After trying all suggested fixes... reinstalling the OS, changing Hard drives, resetting pram, ecm, changing all power saving settings, and then working through software testing with tech support it became obvious that a design or hardware problem existed.
My replacement machine is working perfectly without any of the previous problems. Although inconvenient, Apple was good about resolving the problem, but I would not expect a fix without replacing hardware.

Issue returned and worse yet, Apple wants me to return the computer. Then I can get a refund and then I can order a new one. That could take weeks with no computer at all. I have a business to run. This is absurd. I have spent 3 hours on the phone today on case number 93255142. Wow, what a run around, nobody knows what is going on and can help ever since I got disconnected from the first call. God Help Me Please.

2.8ghz 8core. 8gb OWC RAM, stock gpu. 10.5.2 2 months old. Random restarts from waking up from sleep. I'd say 1 out of 8 times.

Well, I'm going to add myself to the list as of yesterday. Had my 2.8 Octo with the 8800 for 3 weeks. Started doing the restart from sleep yesterday. No software modifications, or system changes at all. Will do it randomly. I do hear what seems like a relay "click" right before the restart. The same faint relay type "click" I hear when using Boot Camp going to my XP drive. I think this is some how related to Boot Camp 2.0.2 and the new Octo Chips regardless of if you use it. Just MO.

Very confused.

Instructed by Apple Care Specialist last night on the phone after reviewing my serial number to bring my machine in. He felt it was hardware related? Must know something? No specific admission.

I'll give them a try, then ask for a new box if not corrected.

p.s. Had what seemed to be a 8800 related Kernel Panic yesterday afternoon. He reviewed the report I sent in on it. That seemed to generate the Hardware visit on Friday.

Will update a few days after return.

Mine had the sleep issue and would reboot every time. Resetting the PRAM seemed to fix it for the most part. However, this morning it wouldn't wake out of sleep, so I had to hold the power button to shut it off and then restart it.

Yes, the PRAM reset only seems to be temporary in those who have it. It's odd how I went 3 weeks of heavy use, and then it "popped" up. I'll know this morning.

3.2 over here. 8800 GT. 10.5.2. about a month old, no "wake from sleep" issues.

For what it's worth, I always do an erase and reinstall as I unbox new machines (i'm weird). i wonder if this is a SW issue?

So far it looks like the 2600XT firmware update has fixed the wake from sleep problem!

If it stays fixed, that's great. However, Apple should have been more forthcoming about the problem, and more forthright about this update fixing it.

Restart from sleep back today. So, looks like Apple Genius simply did a SMC-Reset.

Back on the phone with an Apple Level 2 tech today. States the engineers are on it, and it will be a firmware update.

Likewise. Restart tonight after my third test sleep (also ~8 hours like before).

No fix after all this waiting and investment. Beyond disappointing, Apple.

Received an email response from ALSOFT as to the status of the update to DW 4.1 that will allow booting from the CD. I was informed they are waiting for an updated OS for the Early 08 MP's ( these and the MB Air are the only Macs that will not boot from Disk Warrior 4.1. No time frame was given. This would go along with my earlier Firmware Update post. What do the Early 08 MP's and the MB Air have in common in Firmware?

Time will tell.

Add Me to the list - called apple the girl said - no its not really a known issue- I laughed- she told me to unplug everything do this and that - worked once, now its right back to restarting after sleep mode. What video cards are you guys using - I wouldnt be surprised if it had something to do with the Radeon card - I had issues with my G5 and the ATI cards.

Updated the ATi firmware - seemed to work for 3 or so sleep sessions thru the day
then - it went right back to restarting on its own. Very annoying!!!

That's too bad. I have Pro Care. Perhaps my tech felt a need to be more honest? He specifically told me the engineers were on it, and it was a firmware issue. Personally, I think it's related to Energy Star compliance PM/Battery Life in MB Air as these are the effected devices. The fact that ALSOFT is waiting for a new OS from Apple (hint-firmware change) prior to being able to give us a bootable version for our machines confirms IMO.

If my 8800GT did not have the issues I could go with the ATi complaints. However, this is an equal opportunity issue.

Let's go Steve. We don't need two Microsofts.

Hi there,
At first my 1-week old Mac Pro 8-core was fine but just started to reboot on waking from sleep. I tried the firmware update unsuccessfully. Next I downloaded the Deep Sleep widget. The next morning the computer woke successfully but a few minutes later, the monitor screen went black and the computer would not respond to mouse or keyboard activity, so I had to restart. The next morning, after waking from deep sleep, I immediately deactivated the widget from dashboard and that seemed to do the trick. However, this morning, my computer would not even come out of deep sleep, so I had to restart the computer.

Anyone else here experiencing this with deep sleep?

Add me to the list of people with an 8800GT card with the problem.

It was temporarily fixed by zapping PRAM and doing the unplug thing...but after a few days I was having the problem again. The strange thing is it is not consistent. The other day I quickly put the MP to sleep without thinking and later when I came back and woke it up it actually didn't restart...but it took about 20 seconds or so to revive. During that entire time the HD fans were going full blast much likely they do for the first 3 to 5 seconds when I first boot up. Does that tell us anything? I have my HDs set to sleep whenever possible.

On a different topic, it strange. I never hear those HD fans except for start up and wake from sleep. Otherwise they are dead silent. Does everyone else have this happen?
