i got a new 3 TB Seagate drive NAS HDD for my MacPro
its an early MacPro w 4 HD bays
when I put these drive in the bay, it asks to initialize them but sees them at 810 GB drives
what gives ? cant a mac pro see these at 3 GB ?
what if I were to place them in an ( old ) firewire 800 drive box and open them on a new iMac running
10.9.x
is there some sort of limitation on HD's that I dont know about ?
many thanks

Ive done my best to look into this and it seems that this is what happens with the Oxford Chip set
which I take it is in my firewire 800 box, its old and the MacPro
are there any other external boxes that I might swap this into ? any work around for the MacPro ?
I might try to return them to NewEgg but Im betting Ill have to take the " loss " unless i find an affordable
external box, firewire 800 maybe even empty that I can place these in
your help would be greatly appreciated !

I have 5 TB (Toshiba) HDs in my Mac Pro. They show up fine. Sounds like the partition map has only allocated 810 GB. In Disk Utility, go to the Partition tab, and select the Options button. Select GUID. Then back to the Partition tab, select "1 Partition". Apply.
That should do the trick.
quote fixed for grammar and that annoying short-sentence-paragraph effect.

Yah- that's odd. I've got a 1,1 that takes a 4TB no problem.
Let us know how it goes. All SATA-2 chipsets SHOULD handle up to 6TB with no issue.

I got the Mobius 5 bay RAID system, and am using the USB 3.0 port on the iMac
it partitions the drives I have into 3 TB each, and is very easy to use, quiet enough for me.
2 bay was $ 120, 5 bay was 240 so i went w the 5.
Im very pleased so far. I use it as a 'plain' ext drive box for various HD's .
