Cool, I don't have WarCraft III yet and never even used it before. Thanks for heads up. I'd like to see how it runs on my system.

Hey I'm wondering how well does mac version of WC3 sell (from the amount of people who signed up for b.net)?

I hope it's doing well so we can get more blizzard titles in the future

Same error here. Downloaded twice, both times from Blizzard's FTP. I have Stuffit 7 for OS X...don't think that is the problem. A solution would be nice.

Try this from the terminal:

cat "Warcraft III Demo Installer.app"
[GARBAGE CHARACTERS]This program cannot be run in DOS mode.
or this:
strings "Warcraft III Demo Installer.app" | grep Microsoft
Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer \Shell Folders
Microsoft Base Cryptographic Provider v1.0
Somehow I suspect that this is the Windows installer, even though it is named .app and was stuffed. Someone screwed up somewhere...

I'm pretty sure this is a Windows file, unless that text would be common to both platforms.

Rats. I was hoping I was doing something wrong and the problem would be solved by today...

So I wasted about 3 hours time to download a windows file twice??? (Actually, it was the waiting in line at GameSpy that really had all the time... with DSL the actual download took ten minutes. Dumb GameSpy!)

we have a fat binary application for the demo which actually includes a Windows exe and a Mac application in one file. It's the same technique used on the AMC/Coke demo CD and on the Saliva album. It is not incorrect to notice some Windows-exe data in the file. We could have trimmed this data out however this would have set back the QA and release schedule, all the testing for the CD releases was done on the hybrid executable, so we left it alone.

For those who are technically curious, there is a 'cfrg' resource on the resource fork side of the Installer app, which leads the OS to the native Mac code in the data fork. The native Mac code follows the Windows code in the file, so it's not surprising to see some Windows data near the beginning of the file. The technique works on everything from 9.0 through 10.2.x .

As we do have some reports from users who have successfully downloaded the file and run it, we're still looking for clues as to why some/many of these downloads are coming out bad. I'm checking in with the web staff as soon as I can get hold of them. I do not believe there was any kind of mix up that would have placed a pure Windows demo there as opposed to the hybrid one - certainly the Windows folk would not have MacBinary encoded it.

Do be sure that after the browser tells you that you had a "completed" download, that the file is 106.1 megabytes in size. I have one report of someone being told by their browser that the download was "completed" at only 25MB.

We're sorry for any inconvenience.

here are the file sizes and md5 checksums from the Terminal:

ls -la
111109807 Dec 4 03:46 Warcraft III Demo Installer
111273600 Dec 5 17:54 Warcraft_III_Demo_Installer.bin

and

md5 War*
MD5 (Warcraft III Demo Installer) = 6c5e24382fc7f5906995316f75735a53
MD5 (Warcraft_III_Demo_Installer.bin) = b72d3f658f5ba74991ecadf49dcb476e

Is that what everyone else has?

Something is definitely wrong with the archive on the server, I just downloaded it myself (took all day from home at 3KB/s) and it's broken. There is no point in continuing to attempt to download it until we fix the file. I will try to get it fixed ASAP.

I'm very sorry this got goofed up. We should be able to resolve the problem with the archive within a couple of days.

I'm pleased to announce that after noticing a Dec 8 file creation date and deciding to redownload, I now have a working installer.

ls -la
111109807 Dec 4 03:46 Warcraft III Demo Installer
111273600 Dec 8 02:02 Warcraft_III_Demo_Installer.bin

md5 War*
MD5 (Warcraft III Demo Installer) = fb529cd6d3e02c032e9e9ed04c5b11cf
MD5 (Warcraft_III_Demo_Installer.bin) = b72d263a4d63a94756f1afdab00c0dc4

I haven't fully installed yet (just run the installer to make sure it worked), but if I run into any problems, I'll post here.

A tip-- I found that it was easier to download via FTP than http.

Thanks Rob!
