I have an old power mac 7100/66 that was running Mac OS 8.6.
I need to re install the system software but cannot find the system disks. I have system 8.6 disks that came with my iMac but a message comes up and states that I cannot install the software from the iMac disks onto the 7100.

Is there any way around this problem.

Thanks

You first must purchase OS 8.5, then you can download the free update to it, which is called OS 8.6 from the Apple site. Apple does not make OS 8.5 available through a download.

You must find it elsewhere to purchase. Try an online 'auction' site like ebay or check with some of the following places as they've had OS 8.5 or the full retail version of OS 8.6 for sale in the past.

The downloadable 8.6 can be located here.............

OS 8.6 is here

If the installer will let you do a clean install and in the customize section set it to System for any mac you could then copy the resulting system folder onto the 7100. It's violating the liscence agreement though.

You cannot use an iMac installation disk to install 8.6 onto ANY other machine because the system install disks that come with the iMac (or any system, for that matter) only contain the system files needed for THAT particular hardware.

Only the full version of 8.6 will have all the hardware drivers/files that your 7100 needs.

You should be able to pick up a new copy of 8.5/6 for around $50 or less. Check dealmac.com and ebay and what George Orville said.
