Happy new year!

I just found this: According to http://www.infoworld.com/article/03/...Capple_2.html, G5 has: "....The optical drive in the top configuration is a Sony dual-format DVD burner. The two DVD formats are DVD-R/DVD-RW and DVD+R/DVD+RW."

My G5 is current and has:

PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-106D:

Manufacturer: PIONEER
Model: PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-106D
Revision: A606
Serial Number: CHDL063088WL
Drive Type: CD-RW/DVD-RW
Disc Burning: Apple Supported/Shipped
Removable Media: Yes
Detachable Drive: No
Protocol: ATAPI
Unit Number: 0
Socket Type: Internal

What do you think?

The article refers to DVD-R/DVD-RW and DVD+R/DVD+RW.

I don't think my current G5 burner does all the formats above.

DVD+RW goes up to 2.4x, whereas DVD-RW goes up to 2x.

Otherwise, they're pretty much the same, except that DVD-R discs are usually a bit cheaper than +R discs.

+r isn't read well on Macs, but it works well on XBoxes ;P ...-r doesn't read so well on XBoxes, but read better on PS2s than +rs do...(this is from experience trying to watch a few DVDs recorded on PCs).

Bottom line, there should be a standard, and DVD-writable discs are just poor in general, right now.

I just bought a TDK 840G DVD-R, +R for my PC. I haven't had a chance yet to try it on my Dual G5.

I got it a Staples for $199-$40(mail in rebate)-$30(Staples online coupon for purchases over $150) for a total after rebate of $130. The manufacturer rebate deal is in effect until 2/29. Bestbuy is also selling them for $199.

It burns DVD+R at 8x using 4x media and does 40x CDR burns. It's faceplate is black though whereas all of my other PC's drive faces are white.

Wasn't there some initial reports that Panther allowed use of DVD+R/+RW formats on G5s? Anyone try this yet?

I was actually under the same impression. I thought that with panther, you can burn in either format with dual format drives.

I wouldnt worry about the Sony Drive, your 106 burns the same formats at the same speeds. Im not sure, though, why apple is using different parts in different computers (the 1.25 GHz iMac that i bought for my aunt also has a sony drive).

Well, as I was at CompUSA today anyway, I bought a single TDK brand DVD+RW 2.4x disk to try out on my G5.

I have a dual 2.0GHz G5, which came with a Pioneer DVR-106D drive.

With MacOS X 10.3.2, I was able to successfully burn data to the DVD+RW. The Finder handled the disk just like any other blank media. When the burn was complete, the icon the disk received had a "+RW" under the DVD logo (DVD-Rs get a "-R", etc).

So, the reports seem to be correct. Panther supports (at least in terms of data storage) DVD+R/+RW on appropriate hardware. Cool.
