looks like OS 9.1 allows you to shut down an imac via control-disc eject... now that's worth a 72MB download!

It will shut down my G4 from the sleep button on my Microsoft Internet Pro keyboard, too.

Try this folks!
Go to the keyboard control panel and open the function key assignments.
Assign the fkeys to the speakable items scripts. I have f13 as restart
and f15 as sleep. pretty easy, and i can write applescripts!

well, that would work too... but why do it when there's already an existing shortcut?

Maybe just to tick someone off at work for a Gag, I'll set up a Mac with a Mac hooked-up (we never use 'em) and set it to shutdown via voice command

Every time someone says shut down the poor fools mac will shut-off

Nah I wouldn't really do that

Sure you would
Make it so whenever they swear it does something.
I have a great little app (if you want it you know what to do), that listens for the noise level. When it gets to loud, in Arnold Schwarzennegars voice, it says a variety of things, and if the noise persists, it screams out "SHUT UP!!!"
Very funny thing...
But back on topic, if I had to put up with the pro KB (friggin' useless POS... no power key, what were the morons thinking if they were gonna put a shortcut there for it anyway?? Obviously they now know people still want one!), I'd have an applescript that would give a dialog box like the real one with sleep, restart, cancel, and shutdown.
I wrote one a while ago... I'm sure I could find it...
But anyway, I won't get a KB with no power button
Control-eject my ass... bloody stupid Apple.

that's exactly what control-disc eject does under 9.1 on my imac... it's the same old dialog, so there's really no need for the applescript.

Well. Actually, now you have to hold control/cd-eject then
hit return/sleep restart.....my fkey puts it right to sleep or
restart...or whatever...I miss the old startup key though..
PC folks could never figure out how to turn on a mac.

you know, if we're still talking about imacs, you could just use the existing command-shift-zero combo to sleep the machine.
