I work in rural Tanzania on a regular basis for a charitable organixation to reduce the heavy load of reversible blindness there (mainly cataracts and trachoma).
We have a PC laptop out at our project but it has been hit by viruses so many times to the point where the staff have given up using email last week. However, email is very important to us as we communicate with our team in Tanzania by this means. We also use the laptop to keep track of the surgeries we are doing which is important for the follow-up process.
I won't go into the reasons why virus software has just not made a difference but believe me we have tried.
Anyway I was thinking that a mac would be a good way to get around the virus problems. I wondered if anyone can point me in the right direction to try to see if someone or some company would consider donating an old laptop for this purpose. All we really need the computer to do is have a dial-up modem and be able to run excel. Very basic but doing basic things is returning eyesight to people out there.
Thanks for any help.

...you might try sending a professional letter (on company letter head) to places like macresq looking for a donation.

Maybe even try Apple's department for restorations or something. I have heard that Apple is pretty charitable.

Thank you very much for all the replies. I will try to follow up on the leads.
When one does this sort of work on a volunteer basis on top of holding down a normal job plus all of life's other tasks (family, etc) it doesn't leave much time to experiment with linux, etc. Not to mention I have no expertise in it anyway.
Thanks again for kindly contributing.
