I am very slowly getting insane...

Have had the Powerbook 12" from brand new and have kind of never had any problems. Of course in between I had software crashes but OSX itself never broke down. 6 months ago I decided to change the standard 60GB harddrive instead of waiting for it to die itself. Got a 160GB installed with a few small screwdrivers and a guide I found online. Installed Mac OSX Leopard (now updated to 10.5.8) - I believe this is the last version of OSX that does not only work on Intel-based Macs.

ERROR ERROR ERROR:

Suddently one month ago while I was surfing with Safari I got the "spinning ball" instead of the arrow with the mouse curser indicating that it was loading. But nothing happened... Safari seemed totally stuck and dead and I couldn't even shut it down then trying to use ALT+Apple+Esc. Then found out OSX was dead too? Couldn't access any menus or nothing. Decided to hold down the powerbutton for 5 seconds and do a manual shut down. Started up again and nothing seemed wrong. But during the next days I got the same problem a couple of times more, and then suddently another error type with text (DOS like text with black bagground behind the grey letters) almost filling up the screen in front of OSX. Lots of different codes or errors and in the bottom something with "panic"... is this a kernel panic? I stumpled over this word while I was browsing different forums.
A 3rd error type I have seen is a message in the centre of the screen where it tells me in 4 different languages to please restart my computer holding down the powerbutton for 5 seconds. Bagground is darker and the textbox in the middle is black with white letters.

And suddently after several days of this nonsense it couldn't boot up. Got to the grey screen with Apple logo and spinning load-indicator below but suddenlty stopped and shut down the computer!!! Same thing happened once with only the Apple Mail program oppened. While surfing online this crash happened at different sites so NO it's not because of some semi illegal crap site or anything like that.

Booting up disc utillity (Leopard DVD) to try and repair disc didn't help because it said the disc could not be repaired. I was sure it was a faulty harddrive!

I THOUGHT IT WAS THE 160GB HARDDRIVE:

I had to go on a few days trip so by coinsidence I had taken the battery off because I wanted to install a 60GB harddrive I could borrow from my uncle. When I got back I put the battery back on and booted on the 160GB harddrive and suddently OSX started like it should. The OSX clock was reset to 00.00 in the system but got updated when I went online. Shortly after I got a new one of these errors and decided to install my uncles 60GB right away!

I didn't want to transfer my Timemachine backup because I wanted to test the machine for a while with a fresh Leopard install. Finally that was done... but first after a few attemps because it seemed like the Powerbook couldn't locate the harddrive?

... BUT IT WASN'T:

Been usind the "fresh" Leopard install (only been updated via Apple own standard menu)... everything seemed fine for a day or two... then had another error... and then another... Disc utillity in OSX tells me that the harddrive seems fine. I have repaired disc permissions a few times but doesn't seem to do any difference.

Searched the web and forums like crazy for some kind of help, and learned about the Apple Hardware Test which I found on my original DVD that came with the powerbook to begin with. As far as I know there is no Hardware test on the Leopard Disc because it hasn't been purchased with a new Mac.

HARDWARE TEST:

Just finished the hardware test (booting it from the original system DVD) 45 minutes ago... and I was kind of hoping for a RAM error... that would make things so much easier... But the test told me everything was okay.

1. So its a software error anyways (even after fresh install?)
2. It this a common problem that OSX Leopard runs poorly on a Mac like mine?
3. The odds for both the 160GB and my uncles 60GB harddrive being faulty AND crashing in exactly the same way has so small it doesn't exist.

Thought about installing the old original 60GB harddrive (with Tiger installed) and use it for a while... if no errors appear it has to be a Leopard issue?

Right now it doesn't matter if its Leopard or Tiger or whatever... as long as I can install Office (Word + Excel) and access my Gmail online.
I have timemachine backups from the 160GB so that part is all totally covered. My only concern is the powerbook itself.

I am sorry for the extremely long post, but I might aswell write everything down so no one asks if I have performed a hardware test, repaired disc permissions and so on... Been writing this post on my own powerbook and at least in didn't crash in the middle of it.

I hope someone here has the golden solution!!!

My 12" 1.33 with 1.25 GB RAM works just fine with 10.5.8, no problems. I'm thinking it has to be a RAM problem, with some older RAM not working well with 10.5--and not necessarily showing up on a hardware test. Is there any way you could switch in a different SO-DIMM?

Good to know that it shouldn't be a Leopard vs. G4 issue.

And yes I also saw in another forum that the newer the OSX the more picky it is with RAM quality/condition. But still it has been running Leopard without any problems for several months before.

I did the hardware test again... this time it said that hardware was OK (like before) but then it froze after that => the mouse arrow was stuck so I couldn't move down the curser and click on shut down or restart... WTF

I will now try and remove the added 1GB ram and do another test!
I don't know how I could myself remove the 256MB ram... isn't it a part of the mainboard?... Or maybe not?

Will report back after the test without the added 1GB RAM

the 256 is on the motherboard, it's the 1 GB SO-DIMM that could be the problem.

If you've eliminated the hard drive, then RAM is the next thing I'd move on to.

You would have had to remove it when changing the hard drive, so may have damaged it via electrostatic discharge.
You really need to test it with Memtest booted from a CD - not sure if there's still a free version out for PPC - you could do with finding a PC laptop which takes DDR ram, to test it.

Just did another Hardware test without the 1GB module and everything okay and no freeze. Thought I finally had it... but then did both fast and thorough test with the 1GB RAM module installed again and everytning okay and no freeze...
But then again this hardware test is pretty old and Leopard might be handling RAM differently that this old hardware test.

seanc >>>

Nope... I don't have to remove the extra RAM when changing harddrives. But I do have to remove the lid (4 screws) covering the ram to access a black screw besides the RAM... of course I can't say if I touched the RAM or not.
It has worked since I installed a new harddrive for about 5 months without any problems, but then again it doesn't matter if it was my fault or not.

Will search online for the memtest software ASAP!

My uncle should have something that fits my ram type... he's got tons of that old junk lying around hehe...

Found it!

How to Test RAM Under Mac OS X | Command-Tab

Have tried the program using the guidelines (boot in single user mode...) and seems like it initiates a memorytest... will start a test when I go to sleep later.
Going to do the "memtest all" to make the RAM suffer for hours

I really pray to whoever is up there that this program tells me I got faulty RAM.

Hmm... just thought of something.

Could a program like "iScrool2" screw up Leopard?

It has been installed the whole time, and I installed it again after fresh Leopard install on the 60GB harddrive I borrowed.

Naaah better do the RAM test before I start suspecting anything else.

I did the memtest with all tests passed ok.
3 runs in a row took several hours (while I was sleeping)

But didn't boot it from CD? Does it make a difference when testing RAM?

The proof is in the pudding: Put different memory in it and see how it runs.

What else can you do? No other ideas have surfaced...

I agree... I'll have to see if I can get hold of another 1GB RAM block and if it runs perfectly for weeks then or course the problem must be bad RAM.

Maybe Leopard just uses RAM very differently than the memtest software and Apple's old hardware test?

Too bad I can't just run it with the built in 256MB RAM... I highly doubt Leopard will accept this change of hardware configuration

Just had another crash after I wrote the 11:49 PM post.

Found this on Apple homepage...

Mac OS X: How to log a kernel panic

In the Logs folder where Panicreports should be there is also a crashreporter.
The file in crashreporter folder is called "mds_2009-11-25-095210_... and then what I called my Mac system".

Could anyone of you figure out what has gone wrong from reading this nonsense?

Aha: more information about the problem!

I googled "exc_bad_access sigbus kern_protection_failure" and saw lots of discussion, many different answers.

One person said that reinstalling the java update solved the problem,
Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 4

If that's the problem, then maybe even reapplying the 10.5.8 combo update would also work??

Another person said the problem was with PPC apps firing up,
PPC Apps dont work - The macosxhints Forums

another person used Cocktail (you could also use Onyx) to clear all his caches and that worked.
Apple - Support - Discussions - EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS) iTunes crash ...

And these were just in the first few hits on google.

I guess I'd suggest reapplying the combo update, 'cause that has been known to solve a whole bunch of problems...and can't hurt anything.

Cold Warrior >>>

Many thanks!

amazing >>>

Hmm now this sounds interesting... then I might not have bad RAM anyways. I couldn't understand how a none of the hardware test programs found nothing.

I had 3 of the "mds" crashreports so no reason to repeat then.
2 other crashreports from last week is copy pasted right here...

Will try and google the "EXC_CRASH (SIGABRT)" and see what I find. Seems like I got several different issues then... I especially don't like the thing about the "security" thingy ... Hmm I really don't like any of this whole thing hehe.

So many possible solutions to this problem. Yesterday I installed the Java update from amazing's link, and it has been running almost okay since that. Safari crashed once with another one of those kern-protection-failure, but this time it didn't take OSX down with it. The popup error message stated it could be something with the flashplayer, but I guess this could have been any random online commercial that Safari didn't like or whatever?

I'll try and spend as much time as possible with my little Mac during the next couple of days and if OSX doesn't crash then the Java update just might have saved me.

You are right... perhaps I should stop using the auto-update program in OSX.
After all thats where the previous Java and all other current updates are from.

I really had a feeling I had nailed it... with the new Java + Safari install.
And then this happened a few minutes ago... (OSX had a kernel panic)

This is the report shown automaticly right after reboot:

Does the above mentioned mean that the CPU crashed (or miscalcuated)?

That crash references graphics drivers.

I still say memory, get it changed.

My uncle had a bunch of laptop RAM blocks lying around (yep he's that kind of guy), and was lucky to find 2 blocks with each 512MB (DDR-SDRAM-PC2700), so with a bit of extra luck at least one of them was usable.

Tried first one and OSX only found 256MB so I was actually running Leopard with a total of 512MB RAM... well okay booting up took more than 5 minutes haha!
The other was better and OSX found 512MB (so now running with 768MB of course). This time I couldn't tell any difference from 768MB RAM or the previous 1,25GB RAM when it comes to booting up.

Nothing else to do than wait and see if anything happens...

Will of course do a Memtest + Apple Hardware Test later today on the new (used) RAM even if none of the above mentioned errors appear.

The first stick showing up as 256mb and running extremely slowly, probably indicates that it's faulty. If bad ram doesn't cause crashes, it causes things to be VERY slow.

SEAN>>>

That is very likely... given the used RAM I borrowed has been lying in some box quite unprotected.

Have had no errors today at all. Only noticable thing is that a few tasks is slighty slower (because of less RAM), but I am really REALLY hoping that this is it.

Only been using Safari, Camino (because of some reaon Safari can't be used to insert money from visa-card to mobilphone online), Word, Excel and Adium.

Haven't tested these RAM with any of the test-software yet but maybe tomorrow.
