As I watch the install progress it appears this is more of a complete replacement of every system file than it is a "patch". It looks like there have been wholesale changes made to IE and who knows what else. I'm not overly optimistic about this going smoothly considering I'm running StyleXP and some other tweaks. Not to mention the latest/greatest radeon drivers, etc.. something's bound to get screwed up.

Well, at least most downloads of applicatons that are available on both platforms are bigger for Mac OS X (Icons make up a huge amount of this, I guess). See Adobe Tryouts.

Ah, and I don't complain!

I think when I was running StyleXP on my XP Pro box it screwed up 90% of the time when doing menial tasks.

Nope, localization files. Use DeLocalizer and you'll get probably half a gig back. iMovie alone shrinks from 70MBs to about 10MBs after you get rid of all the extra language files.

It's just a frontend for *NIX commands that seek and destroy the desired .lproj folders. There are no compatibilty issues to speak of.

The only problem I've had with it is that it seemed to kill the localized "fake" app/folder names. If you only run OS X in English then you probably wouldn't notice this, but try switching to Spanish, then log out and back in. Notice that lots of stuff in /, /Applications, ~, etc. are now localized. After running Delocalizer they no longer showed up on my machine. That was in 10.2.x.

You have your choice of languages, though. Retarded anime freaks who can't speak a word of Japanese might want to keep Japanese in it.

I'm an anime freak, but I wouldn't consider myself retarded and I can also speak a good bit of Japanese (have been taking lessons for over two years). I'm insulted.

I'm not one of those that complained. I have DSL!

I don't see any way round it. Operating systems are huge, comlpex things, and all the support systems that go with it. Even if an update was only 10MB in size, that would take hours on a 56k modem, so it's not really an issue of size anymore. Apple, and MS both offer the updates on CD anyhoo, so that's good.

Hey, to the original poster, how is SP2? I'm thinking of installing it too, but kinda worried if it borks my system, any complaints yet?

cheers
