I like Rickman. But the way the film industry works, there is a depressing tendency for him to get type cast as comic Grand Guignol villains. As such, he is always equal to himself, (unforgettable as the Sheriff of Nottingham or the sleazy political spinmaster in Bob Roberts) but underused IMHO. He is capable of so many more dimensions, and is never so good as when he is cast against type.
My favorite performance by him though is as the revenant cellist in Anthony Minghella's Truly Madly Deeply, we have a delightfully nuanced comic portrayal, seductive enough
to get called back from the dead by the grief of his distraught widow, but also sufficiently annoying, flimsy and full of ticks, as to teach her to dispense with his memory and get on with her life.
So what do you guys think, do you think there's more to him than just a villain?

Well.. With Alan Rickman playing Snape, Jason Isaacs playing Lucius Malfoy, and Kenneth Branagh having played Lockhart.. what evil English dudes are left to play Voldemort??

Just like connery and caine before him, he plays himself.
Americans really eat that sort of thing up.

Wow, really? Say what you will about Sean Connery and i actually agree, but aren't Rickman's roles in Die Hard and Galaxy Quest or Closetland for example quite different? I for one would never blame him for always "playing himself".
And if you believed him then the role closest to him in real life would be Truly Madly Deeply.
But whatever, it's great that you know him so well!

I think Alan Rickman is fantastic.
I spoke to him on the phone a couple of times a few years ago and his voice was instantly recognisable, unlike some other celebs I have met/spoken to IRL who sound totally different when they're not acting.

A few years ago he played Hamlet in Liverpool. I went down about an hour after the box office opened and they'd sold out completely. That would have been a great production to watch, I'm sure. The reviews were consitently good.
Gutted to have missed it, he doesn't do much shakespear these days.

He's always struck me as having fun no matter what he does. Even if it's just a mundane B-movie part. I'd invite him to a party ..

I think Gary Oldman is a nice adition to the cast aswell. Here's hoping that the next Harry Potter will be good, because the less said about the previous films the better.
