How can I reset the number of "unread" notices indicated in a program's icon? Specifically, messages is showing 4 "unread" messages on its icon even though I've not only read all of them, I've closed the threads and even tried resurrecting one thread and then deleting it.

Still says 4.

Any ideas? Those little bubbles drive me crazy.

Yup. It wasn't iMessage that was being stubborn, but something within the OS being too busy to update the icon.
