I've been running into some random hard disk issues (for quite some time) and it seems to me the culprit is SATA bus B. I've tried a few drives in and out and swapped from A to B. Then again, maybe it isn't the bus. Everything has been running smoothly the last couple of days without the need to force unmount.
However I would still like to know if anyone has experience using a 3rd party SATA II card for their boot drive or for a backup repository. This would be going into a PowerMac G5 DP, so right now it runs SATA I. Any noticeable performance hits, boosts, or caveats? Do you get SATA II speed?
Thanks.

"SATA II" is not a speed; it was a committee. "SATA I" isn't anything.
I doubt there will be any differences except for 1) actually working and 2) you may not be able to boot off the PCI-X card.

You can find reports on a number of SATA PCI-X cards on http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/ - most of them work without issue except for the booting aspect. (IIRC, one of the name brand cards actually supports booting, but it's very expensive.)

I'm there. "SATA II" doesn't tell me what you're looking for: 3.0 Gb/s? NCQ? Staggered spinup? One of the other features defined by SATA II?
