You know what I mean. It's much simpler to say 1650 x 1280 than WXSGA+. Why do some in the computer industry continue using those meaningless letter combinations? Just tell me how many pixels there are!

I dunno. I never heard of such things, but some people have an easier time remembering letters than numbers?

AFAIK, it's to maintain a few standards. I assume that writing graphics card drivers which operate at 1280 x 1024 is easier than writing drivers which operate at 1278 x 1022, 1280 x 1024 and 1282 x 1026.

Doofy, I don't disagree with you. There are probably good reasons to have some standard sizes. But in marketing to consumers (me), don't make me try to memorize and interpret wacky letter combinations. Just say 1024 x 768.

I agree. It's probably some industry stuff which has spilled out into the wild. I can only remember something like three of them anyways. Too busy remembering other numbers. Like my 15,000 PINs. Or those in the format of "34C".

I agree with you, chabig. Every once in a while I see an Engadget post mentioning that some laptop has "WUXGA", and all I can think is "WTF? Just say the resolution."

From Wikipedia's WUXGA page:

Display Resolutions
QVGA | VGA | SVGA| XGA | WXGA | SXGA | WSXGA or WXGA+ | SXGA+ | WSXGA+ | UXGA | WUXGA | QXGA | WQXGA | QSXGA | WQSXGA | QUXGA | WQUXGA |

HXGA | WHXGA | HSXGA | WHSXGA | HUXGA | WHUXGA,

I haven't heard a person say it in a long time, but ads still say that instead of the actual resolution.

They're a lot easier and quicker for me to type since they're shorter and I don't have to read up to the number keys.

There are only about a half dozen common ones in current usage: XGA, WXGA (poorly defined), SXGA (poorly defined), SXGA+, WSXGA+, UXGA, and WUXGA.
