I'm looking for a cheap mp3 player that can record voice (this is essential), the iPod is too expensive and I only need about 512 MB or 1GB. Does anyone have any recommendations? Amazon.co.uk has a sandisk one for just £25, anyone have experience with sandisk? I really have no idea about other brands apart from Apple.

What level of Mac compatibility do these have? I'm guessing they simply show up as USB drives?

I'm looking for a dictaphone (posted a new thread yesterday in peripherals, where this should be, but then it would have got no replies like my thread...) Would these be good dictaphone replacements, or do they lack features that a dedicated dictaphone would have?

You just plug it in and it shows up on your desktop.

The zen nano and the mobiblu cube have the voice reording features. You will have to find out yourself about Mac compatibility.

It was actually for my girlfriend who has an xp laptop, so Mac compatibility wasn't an issue. In the end she bought a fairly dirt cheap 512 mb mp3 player to record onto and got herself a 2GB Nano to listen to music. I actually tried to stop her buying the Nano, because I thought she wouldn't use it that much, but what can I say, she fell in love with it.

As long as the dirt cheap player is cheaper than the Nano 2G microphone accessory...
Griffin Technology: iTalk Pro - Stereo Mic for iPod

I bought a Micromemo Nano from Apple today, and it sucked. I tried to hook up my Sony ECM-M5907 mic to it and I could barely hear myself. It was in mono even though the Sony mic is stereo.
