From The Digital Bits:
New Line has officially announced the DVD release of their 4-disc The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - Special Extended DVD Edition for 12/14 (SRP $39.99). The set will include more than 50 minutes of new footage added back into the film and many, many hours of audio commentary and documentaries on the production (we'll post a complete list when it becomes available). Also on 12/14, you'll be able to buy the Collector's DVD Gift Set of the film (SRP $79.92) that includes the 4-disc DVD along with an exclusive Minas Tirith keepsake box and an exclusive bonus DVD - "Howard Shore: Creating The Lord of the Rings Symphony."
I might spring for the gift set this time:

This is marketing genius.
The movies themselves are ok.

I think the Gift Set only includes the RoTK extended version, but the keepsake box will probably have room for the other two as well. I suspect that a Gift Set with all three versions probably won't be out for a few months after that.

I don't know about that. Right now, most of the people who would buy the extended RoTK already have the first two movies in their extended forms, and they aren't going to want to buy both of those again. The 3-pack is really only good for getting people who are completely new to the movie series, and right now that's a much smaller market than the people who've already seen the first two and want the third.

I am so getting it that day it comes out !
I've heard that the first Gift Set box (of The Fellowship) has become a collectible, because they made a rather limited number of boxes ( I heard 1 million worldwide ), anyone in here can confirm/deny this ? Kinda curious, because some ppl have offered me money for that first box ...

(LATE UPDATE - 9/9/04 - 10 PM PDT)
Well, we're now hearing that New Line HASN'T yet officially announced the street date for The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - Special Extended DVD Edition. Earlier today we said that the studio had announced the title for release on 12/14. They had published a 2-page spread in this week's issue of Video Store revealing the street date, SRP and other details. Turns out that the ad got printed prematurely and was retracted. So the street date and other release details are still subject to change. Doh! We've updated the posting below and we'll be sure to let you know when New Line gets their ducks in a row on the release information.

Yeah I wonder what the new scenes will be. I assume it will have:
1. Confrontation between Gandalf and nazgul grand poobah. Considering it was in the trailers, it seems a sure bet.
2. Death of Saruman.
3. Mouth of Sauron at Black Gate.
Anything else?

when I found out the date I was a bit mad because Peter Jackson said they would get both DVD versions out sooner because they wouldn't have a movie to promote. When the 2 disc was released earlier this year I was hoping for an august or september release of the 4 disc so I didn't buy the 2 disc to ebay when the 4 disc came out.
I guess I could always pick up the 2 disc used pretty cheap right now if I really want waste an entire saturday watching them back to back to back.

Anything else?
Frodo and Sam at the Cross-roads
Disguised Frodo and Sam marching with the Orcs in Mordor
Aragorn battles the Corsairs, takes the ships (Jackson's cameo scene)
Pippin finds a wounded Merry on the Pelennor battlefield
Houses of Healing: Eowyn falls for Faramir
Aragorn reveals himself to Sauron in the Palantir
The confrontation at Orthanc sounds pretty cool from what I've read, but I won't spoil it for anyone

. Yeah.

Yeah.
Aragorn reveals himself to Sauron in the Palantir
Have you heard that was going to be in? I wondered if maybe the one scene where Aragorn grabs the palantir after Pippin has it.

Yeah I've heard it's a rather pointed scene.

This is the scene with the seated statue of the king with its head knocked off. They find the head with a crown of flowers ... "They cannot conquer forever."
I thought that was in there already too.
It's supposed to be an extended scene with Pippin searching for Merry after the rest of the troops have returned to the city.
Have you heard that was going to be in? I wondered if maybe the one scene where Aragorn grabs the palantir after Pippin has it.
I've read that it happens in Minas Tirith before they march for the Black Gate.

From what I can see, the mouth of Sauron is in there, and also the Gandalf vs Nazgul is there too.
Looks to be worth the price, which if I preorder off Amazon is nearly 10 cheaper.
