Internet Explorer 7

BTW, it just struck me that IE is pretty much dead on all the PCs I use. It's Firefox on those machines.

However, now that IE7 is out, I'll try it.

My timesheets at work (through iEmployee) have to be done in IE. I guess this will make it even awesomer.

No it won't, cause now he'll have to upgrade his sites to support IE 6

My guess is it'll be about 2 years before IE 7 shows up on my work PC...

I'm pretty excited about IE7 because it's support for CSS is much, much better than IE6.

I'm also scared sh*tless how many of my sites are going to need to be fixed because of all the hacks I used to use to get IE6 to work.

c|net: IE 7 video review

Summary:

Odd install process - You have to turn off your anti-virus during the install, and then reboot.
Fails Acid2 (Does anyone care?)
Big improvement over IE 6, but still falls behind Firefox 2 and Opera 9.

I'm using it now.

It took 3 restarts and 15 minutes to install the damn thing on a MacBook using bootcamp.

Apple rocks.

The installation process requires you to turn off your antivirus software? Wow, it looks like Microsoft is really committed to keeping up its standard of security when it comes to Internet Explorer.

My main gripe is the interface. It's a bit cluttered, and appearance-wise it's not attractive.

I have windows defender running but it didn't say anything about me having to shut it off.

This looks like another interface disaster for Microsoft. The tabs, which are the most important part of the browser for basic users, DON'T EVE GET THEIR OWN ROW. I'd bet there's not another web browser that the tabs have other buttons on the same row. MS puts so many useless buttons everywhere they can't even leave the good parts alone.

Depends on the haxors you've used, but you may be surprised though. I've been testing various sites I've done in IE7 for some time now, and despite the liberal use of hacks to get IE 6 to cooperate, I haven't run into any major disasters in IE7.

And yes, it's still behind FF in terms of CSS consistency, but not by much. It makes me wish everyone using IE6 would just dump it now and get IE7. I'm personally tired of spending time resolving layout issues.

I used to use Tantek liberally. I've found other, more reliable ways that aren't as "hack." I'll also have to make some adjustments with my methods of clearing floats.

But I've only run into issues on the pre-release versions of IE7 with a couple of sites. Nothing major.

The more people on IE7 instead of IE6, the better. I'd rather they use FF, but oh well.

A lot of windows software recommends that you disable anti-virus software when doing installs.

I've been using the betas of 7 for a while now. I still can't get past the feeling of "gee, how many unpatched security holes have I opened in this tab?" feeling.

Why in the world would they move the stop button on the right when you are most likely to be typing in the address bar on the left.

Considering most anti-virus software is by third parties, Is it particularly surprising they don't trust MS?

I've been using it under Vista RC1. It's actually nice, but the big thing to remember is they are just catching up to what other browers like FireFox has done. So really there is nothing new as far as the tech goes, it's actually now "up to par" so to speak with all the other browsers.

Unfortunately, Microsoft's foolish decision to only support XPSP2 and up with this ensures that it doesn't up the lowest common denominator. This is quite a shame, because it could have been quite good for the Web if only it went a bit further back in its OS support. As it stands now, though, it isn't going to do anything for the lowest common denominator, which is really just about the only thing IE is good for nowadays.

Indeed. My main work PC is Windows 2000 SP4.

Firefox it is then.

Wow. Avast anti-virus detects a virus right on Microsoft's IE7 download page. Screencap

That can't be a good sign for improved security.

Think I'll stick with Firefox.
