I booted into OS 9 recently, and for some reason the Finder labels are all messed up - bizarre colours and daft nonsensical names.

Which pref file holds this info so I can delete it? The Finder prefs file doesn't work, so I must assume it's something else.

Try rebuilding the desktop file by holding down Option and Command when booting up.

It's been such a long time since I've used 9 that I'd forgotten that old favourite.

Something changed your filenames? Is there any chance you got a Mac virus somehow?

The filenames look like random letters, such as when you open a .jpg in a text editor.

Code:
System Folder:Preferences:Finder Preferences
Trash that file and see what happens.
