So how does it suck?
Another example of Apple's dodgy graphs. Notice they show you percentage increase over old models and not frame rates. In other words, it was damn sh!t before, it's only sh!t now.
What was stopping them from using the 128MB ATI 9700 from the Powerbooks? Also, by September Dell's one month 9800 Mobility exclusive contract runs out. Why not use that chip? It's almost as fast as the desktop 9800.

Apple is really going to make a killing with this machine.
The BT stuff is still optional (not default)
I agree that that should do well with this thing. All 3 are really STRONG values for the money (um, in Apple terms). Given that the 20" ACD is $1299 alone, its like getting a 1.8ghz G5/SD/160gb machine for $600. Not too shabby !!!

I think the whole VESA mountable, bluetooth keyboard + mouse, Airport Express combo is going to be an amazing sell.

When I saw the "Built-in 10/100BASE-T Ethernet" for first time I just brushed it off as a mistake. Then I saw the same numbers listed twice. Looks like no giga ethernet for the new iMac.

....I just don't know if I like it.
I'm for sure going to have to go into an Apple store to play with one before passing final judgemnet, but it really doesn't make me want to whip out the credit card and order one.
I'm sure it's very well built, but it looks a little tope heavy and unbalanced to me.
Also, the face isn't stunning. Would probably like it better were it not for the large area under the screen, though really I can't demand such design/engineering miracles.

People don't understand that.
They think that the only difference between a consumer and pro machine should be the price.
That's why they demand pro graphic cards, FW 800, expandability etc...
People's lack of reality is so annoing...

Dawg, did you even read the specs?
gorickey- it's shannon elizabeth.
As for the VESA mounts - you just buy the kit for $30 to make it mountable, then you can buy any type of mounting arm/wall mount that's VESA compliant.

Neither. It uses a 3.5" Serial ATA HD. Plenty of room for it.

Well I don't care for the design that much, the older one is cooler.
The port placement seems like a bad idea as it will tug on the monitor when you try to adjust it.
The price seems reasonable though.

I don't see this being an issue pending you have at least 1-2" of slack in the cable...the monitor doesn't tilt THAT far.

Yup ... truly cutting edge form has given up a little ground to pricing. Guess the sales of the last iMac have shown Apple that they need to lean a little more toward value instead of "cool". Still, its a nice, clean and simple design. It should do the job without a lot of fuss .. which is a key ingredient for any Apple product

I noticed this too. Maybe all the cables can be fed through the O-ring where the power cord runs. Clip/secure them to the stand somehow and leave enough slack between that and the monitor to allow for free travel.
.... Introducing the Belkin "O-clip"

You'd need a battery in it and a touch-screen display.
That would drive up the price like crazy.
And people would be whining even more...

I am just saying that the majority of school sales (by the state) are done way before school starts. As I am working thou, we have sold 12 of the new iMacs as right now.
Also for educational iMacs theres the option to have no optical drive for 1099

I haven't made up my mind about the new design yet. Just happy that Apple kept to its word and released an iMac G5.

I'm of the "Good pricing, mediocre design" category. It looks functional, it looks smooth, but it's too vanilla. There's no bite to this one.
That said I'm sure it will sell well in the original iMac market, that being the middle-class suburban education family and such. The FP iMac had the wow factor but I think it was too much for the average consumer.
However I shall reserve final damnation until I touch it in person

Ya but most cables run down and under a desk. That means they are pulling the monitor with them.
Also I am trying to picture 2 firewire cables, 3 USB and a telephone cord coming out of it. I think the little girls will like it cuz they can sit around a braid it.

Can deal with the lack of FW 800. But pro graphics card? Gimme a break, consumers like to play games, and the Geforce 5200 is beyond pathetic. I do like these machines for the most part, but the graphics and skimpy 256MB of base RAM are problems. The design is nice, though it strikes me as PC-ish and I will miss the arm.

I'm busy looking at my local Mac store at how much they'll give me as a trade in for my old TiPB. If they give me a lot then I'll be getting a new 15"PB, but if they don't then I'm getting a 17" 1.6 GHz new iMac. I absolutely love this design, which for me is the most functional, in terms of desk space and speed that Apple have ever brought out. I can see this selling extremely well to professionals who code and to offices.
For me this is the best Mac ever.

Oh and like someone else pointed out, it SEEMS like the balance would be kinda 'on edge'. But they probably have taken care of that.
Now to prepare for G5 laptops!

Apple is always stingy on RAM. It's always been like that.
Buy some extra from somewhere else and don't complain.
Apple could have built in 512 and charged you their Apple PREMIUM RAM. Glad they didn't !\
It's true that they're usually skimpy, and most of us Mac owners don't mind. But it essentially means the base price is about $50-$75 higher than what Apple claims it is because 256MB isn't enough memory for a modern desktop. Otherwise, I agree with others. I think it's a good design and it will sell well.

Does anyone know if that little hole in the back underneath the power cord is a cable lock slot ?
It looks like it, but nothing is mentioned in the specs...
