Hi, I'm wondering if the iBook can run with the lid closed under jaguar? You know, to listen to MP3's while the iBook is in my book bag. I'd much rather buy an iBook than an iPod for this.

Uh, why? I mean, the iPod is made expressly to do what you want to do in this situation.

Yes and no...
Apparently you must have a USB keyboard plugged in in order for it to stay on with the lid closed ( i havent tested it yet, but so I am told)
Makes some sense after all, since why would you want to have the ibook on with no way to control it...
Now the big question.... does someone make a small enough keyboard to use as sorta a iPod-remote-esque thing to have hanging outta your bookbag... hmmm...

I had to get rid of my iPod to get my iBook. I wish the iPod remote worked with the iBook. I would be in heaven!

The USB keyboard doesn't matter. Apple is concerned about the heat from the iBook, so they have disabled the closed operation. I don't think that you could ever run the iBook closed.

Yea.... I haven't tried it in Jag, but right up til 10.1.5 you could not operate your iBook with the lid closed, period. You can, however, do this if your iBook is running 9.1.x as this still seems to work with an external USB keyboard attached.

9.1 boots only on the first generation of dual USB iBooks - iBooks from 10/16/2001 or later will boot only 9.2.x, unfortunately.

There has been a few.. "iBook doesn't go to sleep while lid closed" (or something like that) threads around here.. So it might not be absolute.. I dunno..

Well, if you read here (under I/O section), Lid closed operation was a selling point for Jaguar.
Just in case Apple removes it, it reads...
New preferences for CD and DVD burning
Additional digital camera support
Lid closed operation
BlueTooth support
PC Card Modem Driver

I would love to be able to do the samething! Argh! I know there is an OS hack for it, but I'm not going down that road. And paying $399 for a 10GIG iPod (5 just isn't enough, and 20 GIG isn't worth the extra $100) is really a waste of money for me when I carry my iBook with me everywhere!
