HELP!
Is it possible to install a IDE 40 PIN hard drive into a PowerMac 7600?
After opening the box, the slot next to the CD drive is open, but the cables don't seem to match.
Apple's Spec Database, didn't give me enough detail on the interface, but I read that the 7600 has a 80 PIN SCSI. But I'm not sure. Is there a adapter or something out in the market?
This is my first trial so I've no idea on the whole business, but what's the deal with "master-slave" on multiple HDs?
Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Steve

You need to buy an ide (ata) pci card. this will allow for an ide drive to be used. scsi and ide are VERY different, just so ya know. the ide cards are about $99. i am not shure if it will be bootable though. good luck.
P.D.

Your 7600 has a SCSI drive in it, so you'll need one of these also. There is no such thing as an adaptor. I don't remember if there's another drive bay in the 7600, but if there is, you can put the drive in, with this IDE controller card.

Why is there always money for war, but none for education?

Great! I knew there wasn't adapters or any other cheap alternatives for my problem, and my only solution was the PCI card (costly). *sigh* Oh well. Thanks, Phantomdragonz and KarlG for the confirmation!!!

You can get a PCI card or you can just get a nice SCSI drive.
Either way, this is off to the older systems forum

Yep... there is a second drive bay located next to the floppy and CD.

altivec--
A few of additional pieces of information might help sort out your problem.
1) What is the hard drive that is currently in the machine? Is it the 1.2gb that came with most 7600s? I have a 7600 and that's what is to the left of my floppy drive.
2) Did you just buy the IDE drive new? Is it returnable? Why did you buy it? Was it because the SCSI drive was too small?
3) How long have you had the machine, how soon do you plan to buy a new one and what OS are you running?
The answer to these question in part determines whether it really is worthwhile buying the PCI card that lets you install the hard drive. I've been down this road myself.
BTW--I think the 7600 has 50-pin SCSI on all the devices, not 80-pin.

Hi,
Is it possible to install a IDE 40 PIN hard drive into a PowerMac 7600?
Yes it is. You basically have two options; you can either buy a PCI IDE
adapter (several decent options have been mentioned in other posts) or
you can buy a IDE to SCSI converter.
There are several vendors who make IDE to SCSI converters, but the
one that I'm most familiar with is acard. I have a acard Bridge Smart
ARS-2000FW IDE to SCSI conveter that basically allows any (E)IDE
or UDMA33/66/100 drive to be connected to a ultra wide SCSI bus.
A review of this converter on xlr8yourmac.com is located at:
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/IDE/IDE_t...i_adapter.html
I have used this particular converter to add IDE drives to my older
mac's (7600s and 9500s) and my sun's (ss20, u1) without any
problems.
BTW, the 7600 has 50pin SCSI not 80pin.

I tried two ATA PCI cards in my 8500, 1 or 2 years ago, when they first came out. Neither worked.
I now have a PCI FireWire card with an ATA100 drive in an external box. Faster than the onboard SCSI and portable.
Since you have a drive, you'd need a FW card($20-50) and a FW enclosure(mine was $100 @ CompUSA off the shelf, they can be found cheaper). Oxford 911 chipset for the FW->ATA bridge is fastest but I don't think it will matter much on a 7600.
Besides, then you could get an iPod...
