Somehow in OSX I got a window with its title bar off the top of my screen. How can I move or close this window? (you can't click & drag with sides of window in X.)

And how does a window title bar get offscreen to begin with?

Thanks!

What app did it happened in? I bet that it's a carbon app because most of them are poorly-written and usually cause something like window above the menubar

You can get your window back by setting your display to be bigger or smaller..

hit splat-N to minimize it, then when it comes back out it will correct the error.

You can close the topmost window with Cmd+W.
And it is not true that most carbon apps are poorly-written. People claiming that have no clue.

Hmm, nope, my keyboard doesn't have a 'splat' button.

OK, I'll bite: which, pray tell, is the "splat" key?

I tracked it down:

It happens after using Fetch 4.01 and then returning to Finder.

The Cmd-W key does close the window (which of course cannot then be re-opened)

Thanks!!

It's the command key.

Actually, "splat" is the hacker name for the "asterisk"... way too many syllables in "asterisk", so it is shortened by hackers in speech to "splat". Splat is how we say "*".

As a similar example, "exclamation point" is way too many syllables... it is pronounced "bang".

I would guess the splat-like clover symbol on the command key was the source of this usage, but I've never heard that before. I've heard it called the clover key, the apple key, and the command key. If you ask me to hit "splat", I will hit Shift-8... as will most old programmers.

Don't forget: cauliflower key.

Switching resolution might help.

Two strikes against this suggestion:

Besides the fact that Shift-8-anything would be useless...

I assume you meant Cmd+M.

No Mac program should use Cmd+N to minimize... that will typically create a new document or open a new window.

But I would indeed first try Cmd-M and then restore the window... might work. But if not, then Cmd-W would be next. Followed by quitting wholly out of the program once I've saved off anything needed. I wouldn't trust the program after that and would want to restart it.
