I'm d/ling OS 9.1 now, but was curious as of what difference would it make. Will it add to 9 or will there be a change in apperance? What is it's advantage? Thanks

The Finder has a new "Windows" menu plus some new keyboard shortcuts; updated FireWire support; updated Carbon support; updated OpenGL drivers; other under-the-hood changes. It cuts down on the clutter on your hard drive by combining some of the OS-created folders. It's supposed to be faster, too.

I am running system 9.0.4 on my iMac and can't see a reason to upgrade to 9.1. Will it be needed to upgrade to OS X? If not, I think I will pass.

9.1 is noticable quicker & more responsive than 9.0.4, and it wakes up from sleep very quickly. It wakes up & is usable before the monitor has properly warmed up! Folders, pop up tabs & apps seem to open more quickly, and when many apps are open, switching with comd-tab is snappier.

I too thought that 9.0.4 couldnt be beaten, which is why I held off updating for a couple of weeks. Now I am glad I did. the only compatibilty issue i have found is that techtool doesnt work, but thats hardly the end of the world

hi, i downloaded all the parts but i'm still a bit confused by the installation instructions. is it best to startup from my 9.0 cd before running the update/installer? or can i just update it as is, running 9.0.4 on b/w G3? thanks...

Copy installer to your desktop. Restart and hold down "shift" key. You will boot with extensions off. Use installer to update. Restart.
Doing a clean install from your OS CD is a different operation, recommended, but a bit involved for a novice. Read these fora, and you'll learn a lot. Good luck.

I installed 9.1 by changing the extensions to 9.0.4 base, and booting off the OS 9 CD. From there I ran disk first aid, then ran the 9.1 installer downloaded from the web. Perfect first time! i had a nice update experience; I dont know if every body has.

I of course backed up the important stuff before I ran the installer, just in case!

Changes that I've noticed:

icons look better
file sharing starts up way faster
fixed date and time resetting to 1904 after firmware update (yay!)
more stable

DocWest is right. FileSharing starts up way faster than it did in 9.04. Overall the whole system seems faster. Especially when scrolling through menus and opening control panels.

Here are some other changes that I thought I should mention:

- The General Controls & the Sound control panels have been updated/redesigned.
- Startup Disk allows you to boot from different System Folders located on the same startup disk.

How long will it take to download the 9.1 update from the web using a dialup connection 56k modem?

I recall Apple saying that a download on a 56 k modem would take 5-6 hours. It is about 70 mb download, in several parts. I am on a LAN, therefore I downloaded theone big file in about 3 minutes. Joy! ;-))
