I'm making an update to Milk and I've sort of stumbled into a new direction.
There are a few buttons that really needs a good way to reflect a toggled state, like in iTunes when you press the Loop or Shuffle button, they start to glow blue. In the current version of Milk, the toggled state is reflected by the pressed buttons becoming darker and looking a bit more pressed in.
So what I've stumbled upon is the idea of adding a baby blue color as a selection/toggle color for Milk. The inspiration for this is Apple's iPod photo banner:

I'm not sure if this would go over well with Milk users, since Milk has always been white and gray. Although the theme would mostly still be white, and since the theme is a good match for the iPod look otherwise I thought it might be cool to have this baby blue color in it.
Or maybe the regular Milk and Milk Chrome versions could use this baby blue color and that the chocolate versions could use a black/grey selection.

Tell me what you think!

I think it's your theme, Max and you should do what you deem best. You've earned that kind of respect.

That being said, thanks for asking. Your plan sounds great to me.

I'm 99% sure it'd look gorgeous, one problem I had with milk is that it seemed very.. Well.. Very white. Even though that sounds daft, you have to tailor your icons and such to make it all fit. I think a splash a colour, even just as an option would be great and liven it all up..

Can we have a quick example? Can we? Huh, Mr. Rudberg?

Ok, sure.

I made this color a bit darker than in the banner, because the white text is a little hard to read otherwise.
This would be used for selection in lists, the sidebar selection, item info in the finder (the menus) and as a toggle color.

I'm pretty sure I'll be using the chocolate versions, so you can pretty much do what you want with the regular versions.

Looks good, though.

As long as it's a different flavor, likeI don't knowwhat would you call that flavor of milk? Cream?
Anyways, it looks great. Milk needs color like I need money.

I think it's a well thought idea Max. I'm glad to see you looking at things for visual reference for your themes, this in my mind has always been one of your greatest strengths to your themes. I'll second the thought that you have earned the respect of most Apple users and you should proceed as you see fit.

It looks good, but it shouldn't be too blue as we already have Swiz' blue white-and-blue theme.

that is sweet the baby blue is nice and the bevels are clean. Nice changes.

I love the Milk themes but they were replaced by the 3nzo MOD because of my unhealthy attachment to the color blue. I suppose if you wanted to set the milk apart from other themes using bright colors for highlighting -

Use muted colors - like they had milk added to them...

But I have to agree with DigitalEl comments. Your work is awesome. We trust your creative edge.

I love the white and gray though as well. Is it possible for you to update and just give it another version, say, iPod edition?

Oh, and Max, another idea.
I've always not-liked () the chrome Apple in the upperleft corner.
Maybe it's an idea to make it like the Milk buttons?

Wow, looks gorgeous

Maybe Skim Milk? Dunno...

That blue is the perfect color though. Kind of reminds me of some kind of birthday cupcake whipped icing or something. Frosty without being cold.

Why is it still being discussed and not released yet?

Just kidding Max, we missed you around here. Glad to see you back in action!!!

Btw, are you gonna be updating or enhancing Eylo anytime soon? People have talked about a dark/black variation of it, any chance on that?

Thanks!!! Looking forward to the Milk update

Thanks for all the input people

I'm not exactly sure how I will go about it with variations, but there will be baby blue in the theme.

I don't know, I haven't gotten that far yet. I'm going to update the themes sometime, but my pace is pretty slow. I thought about remaking EYLO based on the new HUD in Halo 2, but I'm not sure about that.

BTW Max, I just discovered a bug in the old Milk-version.

I don't know if this has been reported before, but the problem occurs in the dropdown-menus in the Word 2004 preferences. The dropdowns just stay empty no matter what you choose.

I've tried with different themes, and this only happens in Milk.

Thanks for the headsup, just checked that in my build and it's fixed already. Must be because I redid the text colors.

a suggestion...

what goes really well and would seem to me like a nice update and renewal to the milk theme, which is amazing ofcourse, is something that the line of iMacs and iBooks went thorugh: they made em a bit glossier. I'd would personally love to see that so it can go really really well with an ibook g4 or an imac g5, or hell even the emac.

i found these buttons on the apple site that contain a similar milky yet glossy style:

click to make it bigger

cheers and good luck on the theme

It's almost finished, I only got the chocolate menus left to do. Then there is the possibility of making more variations, or not. However, I have my final driving test on thursday, and I'm really nervous and I find it hard to focus on something else right now.. So this will have to wait a bit longer.

Yeah, well, I flunked it. I did pretty good though and I'd like to try again as soon as possible, but now it seems there are no new times available until the 11th of January :/

I'm gonna see if I can finish the Milk update this weekend.
