hehe.

I actually quite prefer it to twitter, although it still has some issues to work out, namely with the pownce app. It's only in the Alpha stage though right now.

Invite only is just a nice form of crowd control. You don't want to open it up to everyone right away and end up crashing the servers for weeks.

I'll trade someone a Pownce invite for a Streamy invite. PM me.

Just setting up Pownce right now, I've noticed some inconsistencies between the widget and the page, eg: times and links, but otherwise it's nice looking.. A mobile version of this widget would kick ass. Or even better, an iPhone version.

But invite-only is also a form of Intarnet Elitism. When LiveJournal killed their invite-or-pay-to-register system a few years ago (after they got powerful enough servers to handle the load), people flipped the hell out. Why? Because they didn't like the fact that killing the system meant that they were no longer special, elite, better, and superior to those around them without LiveJournals.

Google did invite-only to generate hype. Do you really think that the biggest search engine on the planet wouldn't have the network stability and server capacity to handle hundreds of millions of users in gmail right from the get-go? Gmail did, at least, (sort of) quickly move from a few invites per person to hundreds of invites per person to mobile phone registration to open registration.

Invite-only sites are just annoying. There's only a few legitimate reasons why you would use invite codes: (a)To attempt to keep the feds out, as in the case of OiNK, (b)To see if your servers can handle your application, like with some of these smaller sites, or (c)To generate hype and a feeling of elitism among your users, which is the lamest reason of the three. When did the Internet become a popularity contest? It's just irritating.
Sell or send me your vintage Mac things if you don't want them.

It's invite only right now because it's still in Alpha: it's not publicly live yet. They are testing it, and debugging it.

Yeah..I was just saying that there's other reasons for the invite-only thing.

FWIW I got my Pownce invite at www.inviteshare.com - someone sent me an invite the same day I added my email to the request list.

Interesting site. Optional song would be nice (but, that would of course be 'myspacing it out').

I don't see how you think it is a substitution to email? It serves a different purpose.

Pownce is a great way to send stuff to people you know. Add friends, then send them big files, invite them to upcoming events, share great links, and whip off a note to anyone, everyone, or just a few people.
Sure sounds like what I do with email.

So does facebook, but I know a lot of people who have abandoned email and receive all messages there.

And then they tell you to contact them there instead of email because they don't check email. Nice that we're going to splinter internet communication into 1000 places and create a giant inconvenience.

When they created cell phones, they connected them to the existing phone network instead of creating a private world just for each company's cellular customers. Why? Because they would have died without it. Get a few more of these goofy websites and they're all going down because of the inconvenience of it all.

It's not revolutionary. My group of friends got in and we used it for about two days. We then went back to email and senduit.com to email large files. I'm not impressed.
