will ther be an upgrade discount from OSX 10.1 to 10.2 if you bought it a while ago? I hope so. Otherwise, I can't justify buying a new OS every 6 months.

Just another example of apple screwing its faithful. You get punished for being the first to support their new OS. I guess I'll wait for OSX 10.3 or maybe i'll just "switch" to PC!

I agree this sucks pretty hard. I think the least Apple can do is float us 10.0 adopters a break. (Time to start calling my cousins in college I think.)

Well, to the best of my knowledge, the last time I bought an Apple OS was in March of 2001. Granted, the fee back in Oct 2001 for the upgrade disk was for the 'OS'. But, this is the standard rate apple charges for 'shipping and handling' and its been like that for atleast 5 years.

So, to shell out $130 at the end of this August, i.e., 1.5 years from the last time I had to purchase the OS... I think thats pretty good, actually.

But, to each their own.

Apple gives them to you so that IF they do decide to do something like that they already have a mechanism in place.

Remember the OS 9 $20 rebate for people who had previous versions?

BTW I do think it should be free (as kinda a first really good version), but it's not like MS would give us a lesser upgrade for free.

Just wait for the new product activation features for the J-wire...we might actually have to pay instead of whine and steal...

I can't see how they will not make it more difficult to activate and keep up to date. The pricing model w/o protection discourages compliance

My brother pointed that that if anything, Apple is also REWARDING those that stuck w/ 9 and didn't install or use X at all up until now. Quite annoying if you ask me and a good way to say "HAHA SUCKAS!" to all those other loyal users who embraced X when 10.0 was first released (myself included). I think I'll be needing to relay these thoughts to Apple in the near future...

There's nothing requiring you to upgrade to 10.2 other than your own personal desire to upgrade. If you look at the system requirements of all the new iToys they released today they work with 10.1.3 and up which falls into your "I want it for free" ethos. If you bought 10.0 in March last year and then got their 1 10.1 upgrade in September you're not being charged too much. The same goes for OS9 stalwarts whohave yet to upgrade to 10. If you bought 10.1 for the full price four months ago you obviously weren't paying attention to the Apple news. Jaguar has been in development for awhile and theseboards have been buzzing about its features quite a bit. You should have assumed itwasgoing to bea paid upgrade being a whole point upgrade. The 8 > 8.5 upgrade cost you money, so did the 8.6 > 9 upgrade. The only cheap upgrade has been the 10 > 10.1 upgrade because the 10.1 released was the one they should have named 10.0.

There's also a fair number of discounts Apple offers for their software. The educational discount is pretty steep as is the government employee discount. While 10.2 isn't exactly cheap and I might have to wait to buy a new Mac in order to get the upgrade, it is fair for the features they've added in my opinion.

Regular upgrade pricing ha! I don't remember OS9 (boxed) being close to 100. I remember this because I got 9 on a wim from a local store.
UK Macnn'ers look at the UK Apple store for 10.2. It has 99.01 in big letters on the page, but click on the Save for later button & it magically has a subtotal of 84.26 plus VAT of 16.50 with a total of 100.76?? Where did the original 99.01 figure come from? Someone has made a mistake somewhere?
Also the only place you can get to the 10.2 UK purchase page is via the UK Apple Store the links on the UK OSX page link to the US payment page.

It seems like no matter what Apple does everyone thinks they're getting ripped of or cheated. So what if you bought the beta and the final release. The Beta was just that, a Beta and you knew that. The only reason Apple allowed everyone to buy the beta was because everyone complained and said they wanted it. Then, everyone complained that they bought the beta and wanted a discount on the final...which Apple did. The final release Apple said it wasn't really ready and everyone knew that as well. They gave 10.1 away for "free." At what point is it okay for Apple to actually make some money on the OS??? Never??? Don't buy it or switch to Windows but stop complaining. Apple never promised you free OS updates for life just because you bought the beta. 10.2 is pretty amazing and offers sooo much more than OS 9 and so you should have to pay for it.

I only feel like I was some kind of beta tester for Apple this whole time (10.0-10.1.5) now that they decided to put the same price on their upgrade as was on the original version of OS X. Even though 10.2 has so many new features, about the only ones I'm looking foward to are iChat, QE, and Spring Loaded folders. Will I buy 10.2? Probably. Do I feel as good about Apple's marketing decisions as I did before? Not really.

I would pay up to $99 for this upgrade, but $129 for 10.1 users is just tad too much.

I'll be asking a friend who's a student to buy a copy of Jaguar for me.

People who just bought a boxed copy of 10.1 have every right to be annoyed (even if it wasn't the wisest thing in the world to do, w/ 10.2 just around the corner).

I think the Up-to-Date program should be expanded; people who bought a Mac or the boxed 10.1 in the past three months should have the opportunity to get a discount to 10.2... say, for $89.
