So i've tried re-installing it 3 times, trashed all prefs...nothing. Does anyone have any idea onhow to get iPhoto back up and running for my mom?

Have you tried repairing disk permissions?
The exact same thing happened to me after updating iPhoto4, but after fixing permissions, everything worked just fine again.
