None of the utilities currently available for creating a swap file work in 10.3, has anyone found a way to do this in 10.3.

I don't want to use the previous methods that were used in previous versions of the OS for fear of major problems.

Yeah... I'm seriously curious about that as well... I have a swap partition that I'm not using!

Good God, let the OS create the swap files.

Yes and no. If it's on the same disk but a different partition, you get ZERO benefit. If it's on a different physical disk, there is a point. But really, only do this if you have a clue (which I do not).

I too have been meaning to move my swap over to my second unused disk but unfortunately none of the GUIs that worked well with 10.2 have been ported to panther.

Anyone know the UNIX commands to do this again? They probally haven't changed.

Slightly off topic, but this is one difference I noticed with Panther that no one has brought up (that I know of)...

Where Jaguar uses 76.2MB swapfiles, the swapfiles that Panther creates are in 64MB increments (not exactly 64MB, but they double in size starting at 64MB; for example, 64MB, then 128MB, then 256MB, etc, depending on current memory usage).

Does anyone have any idea how this might affect vm performance, or if it does at all? Are there any other deeper changes to how vm operates in Panther? (for example, recycling unused swapfiles?)

If the swap utilities don't work I would think that their have been changes made that would prevent going into the terminal & doing it manually?

Swap files are now dynamically sized in 10.3.

don't assume that at all.
the instructions which point to where the swap files belong is loaded in the boot process. it is just a matter of finding the appropriate config file and altering it in a text editor, nothing more. this is a unix system, you can set swap wherever you want, Users wherever you want, etc...

i'll be setting up a swap partition on my laptop, no doubts about it.

When you figure out how to do this, would you please post the procedure?

Thanks

If your drive is heavily fragmented, you wouldn't want your swap file getting broken up all over the drive, but other than that, what difference does a swap file on the same disk but different partition make?

What is the significance of that? Is it better somehow?

SwapCop acts like it is working. But then do a "find" looking for "swap" and you will see that nothing has changed...

The developer has just released an update to Xupport. One of the features allows the swapfile to be relocated, and it actually works!

Check it out:

Regarding SwapCop,

Do a search using "Find", be sure to look for visible & invisible files. Search for "swap" on your partitions & you will probably find that the "swapfile0" is in the original location and has not been relocated. SwapCop goes through all of the motions but actually does not relocate the swap file.
