God only know why the old topic was locked because one person said a bad word

----

Ok so there are very well known features about Tiger that everyone know.

I have also found a bunch of Little things people may not know about it. Please list what you find.

Dashboard:
The little + sign to add new widgets ROLLS when clicked making it look like it is winding up the drawer.

Safari:
Hitting the RSS feed makes the URL roll down into the page (cool effect)

System:
Contextual menu to search something in Google

Spotlight:
Hitting Command Space in any app brings the spotlight search field down.

System Prefs:
Lots of new desktop pictures.

New Paper screensaver

RSS screensaver is the coolest thing ever. You need QE or it doesn't even show in the list.

Font screen smoothing has an Automatic setting ( a good thing as everyone I know with an LCD had it set to the default of CRT)

Recent Servers in the Apple Menu

Startup disk lets you set your computer as a target mode.

New system sounds when moving files and emptying the trash.

Quicktime:
Changing the players size has it smoothly adjust to the new size not jump. You have to have QE as far as I can tell.

You can select a word (or words) in any application and right-click to:

1. Search Google.
2. Search Spotlight.
3. Look it up in the built-in Oxford Dictionary.

Using "Get Info" on multiple files brings up multiple info panes now. But... hold down the option key and you can choose "Show Inspector" to have it in one.

Nice.

Hearsay only, but: hold down command during a Spotlight menu bar search to shift the return-savvy default from "Show All" to "Top Hit."

i.e., command-space, type, command-return to launch your top hit w/o using the mouse.

Cool. You can also avoid mouse usage by using the arrow keys to navigate the search results.

Could anyone check if they've made the Services menu also available in the contextual menu (which is the place where it would actually make more sense...) of text fields / text areas?
TIA

Well, to be exact, multiple panes isn't new, it was in 10.0. But the functionality which is now in the contextual-menus is new. The Panther way was a simple pane with the accumulated results showing. This method brings both options in the menu by holding the option key.

You can toggle between both types.

Dragging icons out of the Dock now shows a poof to the lower right of the cursor. Same goes for icons in the sidebar.

Preview.app's new slideshow feature is very cool. It's just like iPhoto 5's but with the addition of a Expos-like thumbnail view.

Man Apple has put some serious polish into Tiger. Adding Services to the contextual menu system will open up a whole new world.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe Apple did this for Tiger -- they just added items they think people will use most often, e.g. Spotlight, Google Dictionary. IceCoffee hasn't lost its purpose yet.

Spotlight makes Default Folder X as fast as it once used to be on the Mac, this is really good news for me.
How do I know it's Spotlight the reason? Because navigating with DF on the partition that Spotlight won't index is as slow as it ever was in OS X.

Here is one more thing I haven't seen many people mention.
If you press F12 as you are dragging a widget out of the dashboard dock, you can place the widget in the finder so that it is always visible.

That's not a feature... it's a bug. Switching to Dashboard and back will remove the widget again.

Yeah, that is cool. Being able to select a bunch of images in the Finder, then making a slideshow to view them, is very smart. Plus, the "Index sheet" option in the slideshow really makes it shine, that is just too cool.

Nice.
The multiple files inspector is handicapped by the fact that it can't add spotlight comments to multiple files.

Two words : Quartz Composer

The RSS screensaver is just an instance of what you can do with this app. Amazing. Complex, but amazing.

I'm glad to hear that Preview has been improved. I think it's just about the worst app ever. The slideshow thing sounds great. I hope the loss of animated GIFs isn't true. That function needed to be fixed (the way the stop/play window would come down over part of the image), but it shouldn't be eliminated.

My real question: When you close the last preview window does it close the application, or does it stay running in your dock forever (as mine is right now, probably from days ago) until you bother to quit it?

Preview has a Grab feature (selection, window or timed screen)...the selection cursor gives you coordinates and it saves the file as a tiff. The Command shift 3 and 4 method save it as a png.

Close and Quit are different functions. It is generally not polite for Mac apps to quit just because you closed the last window. That's the Windows way. Just leave it running and don't worry about it. If it really bothers you, just quit it yourself.

I'd call that a feature with a bug (i.e. if they fix the remove problem, it'll be a good feature)

If i log onto iChat with Tiger's iChat 3.0 it disconnects other 2.x version that are connected to the same account

It used to let me connect on as many accounts as i wanted.

Although, i dont miss that AOL Sys message that would pop up if i logged in whan i was already logged in.
