I think it's cool that the folks at engadget may have actually tracked the kid down to get him an XBox.
Mean people suck and random acts of kindness =

I couldn't bring myself to watch it either. Maybe it has to do with having kids of my own, but I didn't want to see the disappointment in that kid's eyes while his family laughed at him.
to engadget for getting that kid an xbox

Wow. I can't believe it. I did the same thing to my brother when I was little. (Before you call me names give me a second to explain...)
He was about 10 or so and wanted a Nintendo, so mom ended buying him one for Christmas. It was under the tree, and a week or 2 before Christmas he ripped the paper a little, saw what it was, and began dancing around the house singing, "I got a Nintendo! I got a Nintendo!" So, my sister and I decided to teach him a lesson. Without mom knowing it, we unwrapped the package, took out the Nintendo and the styrofoam packaging, and put some of my old sweaters and a some weights into the box, and rewrapped it. On Christmas, he unwrapped the box singing. "I know what this is. I know what this is." Took the paper off and said that he knew what it was all along. We told him, "Open it up." And his smile turned to a frown within seconds as he pulled out the old sweaters and the weights. We told him we borrowed the box from one of his friends who had a Nintendo, and not to tear he box because he wanted it back. He was pouting and making faces the rest of the night as we all opened presents. The last present of the night was to my little sister. When she opened it up, it was the Nintendo in the styrofoam packing. My brother figured out what we had done, and realized that it was really his present, his face lit up again and all was right with the world again.
I know it was mean (but hey, I was in high school and wasn't that bright), but he never peeked at his presents again.
I know that one of us has that on VHS somewhere, but I have to find it.

I could only watch half of it. That was cruel. I'm glad he was able to finally get his Xbox.

Yeah, I couldn't bring myself to watch the video. Poor kid. The line about them saying, "C'mon, you know we can't afford an Xbox!" solidified my knowing that I wasn't going to watch the video.
Glad that Engadget and even Microsoft are going to help out this kid.

Those parents are giving him a good lesson.
Because, let's face it, unless you're as talented, intelligent and good-looking as me, you're going to encounter such disappointments in real life. Even I encounter disappointments occasionally ("and I really thought her undies would be red, not black. How disappointing."). Might as well get used to it at an early age.

That was aweful, I cannot see how
A. a parent could be so cruel and mean to do that to their child.
and
B. someone think this prank was funny.
sorry macfantn but your type of humor no better then the aweful parents and you laughing at a poor child getting screwed like that is no better.
kudos to engadget for doing what the parents should have.

It's rather heart warming to know the kid may score the real deal.
I wonder if I can find a Mac Pro carton to wrap up next Christmas...

Yeah that was very not-nice. The word "cruel" is a bit of an overstatement though.
I especially love the allusions that the parents are somehow "unfit"…
It was just an ill-conceived prank by people who did not know how to deal with it.

Ya it takes some real talent to trick and majority disappoint a 8 year old kid. It also takes some serious intelligence to find that amusing.
That video made me feel so sick watching him start to cry I was close to sending him my own Xbox but engadget seems to have it covered.
It wasn't the least bit funny or creative, his parents are trash.

As someone who grew up with people that did crap like this to him, I say that it's not as big a deal as you think.

what's the point of that, jerk around a little kid. seemed like a nice kid too. need a little more info to find this funny, like there's a history of pranks in the family, and the kid participants on some too. as is, not funny.

I have to agree, this type of thing was rather common when I was growing up. I still remember the look on my cousin's face when he got an Atari box filled with underwear.

It's not the prank (which by itself is fairly benign), it's the taunting that's bad. When you see you made your kid feel low, give him a hug and tell him you're just busting his chops instead of telling him to "look at the camera and cry."

I forget where I read this, but apparently the parents' did buy the kid an XBox. But they found out he was trying to peek at his presents before Christmas, so they pulled this prank on him. He did actually get an XBox for Christmas.
The prank was a punishment for peeking.

If that's true, and he got the XBox after a few minutes of feeling crappy, then it's not so bad. Teaches him not to peek, but it's all OK afterwards.

What the nerd community most often fail to realize is that all features aren't equal. A well implemented and well integrated feature in a convenient interface is worth way more than the same feature implemented crappy, or accessed through a annoying interface.

The parents were idiots, they couldn't even fill the box properly, but he still fell for it. cjrivera did it right, putting some weights in the box. I know that a 360 box with the stuff in is damn heavy, and he was tossing that around like it was full of... clothes .

They can afford a camcorder, but not an Xbox 360?
EDIT: And a computer?!

You do not appear to understand poverty!
Poverty is less than $32k a year income *, regardless of (1) number of TVs in the house, (2) beers in the fridge or (3) Caribbean holidays per year. Silly!
(* Yes, the UK government classes anything under about $32k per year as "poverty". Don't ask me - I don't make the rules. Yet.)

This Be The Verse
They **** you up, your mum and dad.
They may not mean to, but they do.
They fill you with the faults they had
And add some extra, just for you.
But they were ****ed up in their turn
By fools in old-style hats and coats,
Who half the time were soppy-stern
And half at one another's throats.
Man hands on misery to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
Get out as early as you can,
And don't have any kids yourself.
Philip Larkin, 1971
Hmm...can't post this poem w/o editing for "language." That's ironic and/or a lesson for ya.
