Is 512 MB of RAM enough for making music in Garageband, Reason, FL studio and other applications? Also some light video editing. Other than that, just web surfing, AIM, MSN and chat applications. Is 512 enough?

no, most of these programs ask for at least 1 gig of ram. 2 gig is perfect
for Chatting etc 512 is good enough. but for serious work with music in this case a gig is a most

Nooooooo! Get at least a gig, 1.5 works pretty well on my machine, but OSX barely runs in 512.

512MB of memory would be possible if your funds do not allow more, but you will find yourself switching in and out of applications a lot. The experience would not be that great.

I managed with 1GB of memory for a long time, but as soon as I started to develop my podcast and website, I found that I wanted to have multiple applications open at the same time. As soon as I upgraded to 2GB everything was sweet again.

My advice is to buy as much as you can afford.

So I have 512mb of memory, I run itunes alot (w/iPod) and Safari, I do some Photoshop stuff and download photos, when I open up office for mac it's slow and when I click on stuff it takes a while, so i don't know if it's cause of my 512 ? I run iChat, iTunes and Safari simultaneously.

If you're on a Mactel Office is running in Rosetta, which would tax your 512MB.

I really suggest 2GB. You'll notice a HUGE difference bud.

As a policy at work, we don't buy any new machines with less than 1 GB of RAM. With the current software and some of the stuff coming down the line, 1 GB or more is going to be completely necessary.

hehe just a couple of months back in december I juuuust about managed to piece together a 7 track EP on my Macbook 512mb... it was a bit of a battle, but I guess it depends on how determined you are.

Now running on 1gb until fundage allows for the next stick... hopefully my next EP will be produced a lot quicker lol!

upgrade your ram, as everyone's saying, you'll notice the differences in lots of areas in iLife!
