That landing system was just insane. So awesome that it all worked. I can't wait for the inevitable IMAX movie about it, no doubt called "7 Minutes of Hell." They'll be able to do a really nice CG recreation of the entry because they got all the telemetry data during the landing.

I saw an interview with one of the sky-crane engineers, and he seemd kind of offended at how people are calling it insane.
He went through a long (but very interesting) discussion of how this was a well thought out and perfectly sane solution to the problems posed by landing such a large and heavy rover.
He's wrong. Actual sanity is irrelevant here. That was batshit.

It really sucks that there was no way to get video footage of it!

What I don't get... The thing has 17 cameras, but none over 1600x1200 resolutions!
You would think with spending over 2 billion dollars we could get some higher definition.

All those cameras are sharing the same pipe, which I'd guess is less than a megabit per second.

Also, the finer and more detailed technology is, the more prone to failure it is.
Nothing like spending 2 billion dollars only to find that your primary cameras have damaged sensors from conditions that the lower-specced but much more tested older tech would have survived.

I think we are going to get video of the descent and landing. It'll just take a few days for the file to be transmitted back to Earth. Stay tuned.

Good point. The MacNN News Poster claims the CPUs are based off of PowerPC 750s, the same family the Moto G3 came from.

Yeah, a variant that has been manufactured to increasingly ruggedized and environment-hardened spec over the past fifteen years.

Apparently LOTS of pictures were taken as Curiosity descended to the surface of Mars. Here's a video made from the pictures:

VERY cool.
