I can hear the beep when I put the Mac Pro to sleep. I can't figure out where it is coming from or what causes it.

Computer specs:
2*2 GHz Dual Core Intel Xeon
8 GB RAM
NVIDIA 8800GT
640 GBs Samsung SpinPoint F1 HD642JJ (boot disk)
320 GBs Western Digital Caviar WD3200AAJS

and…
- system is 10.5.7
- display is Apple Cinema 30"
- Bluetooth is turned off
- Airport is on
- disks are set not to sleep
- there are no external speakers
- Apple slim keyboard, corded
- Logitech MV Revolution mouse, wireless
- peripherals: just a LaCie brick USB hard disk
- no Boot Camp installed

Apple Care ends next October, 24.

Thoughts??

Thanks for the link dzp111. I'm not sure that relates to what I'm getting since those MacBook Pro are not asleep.

take off the side and see if the ram LEDs glow red when it beeps (happens when you hold power to force a power down).

It could be some kind of warning relating to your 2032 battery being low too...

Entirely unrelated. Those are beeps from HDDs during regular use on MacBook Pros. The OP is talking about a beep before sleep on a Mac Pro.

rozwado1, thanks, will check that.

Simon, actually the beep is while the Mac Pro is sleeping, bad wording on my behalf.

Does the beep continue even if the Mac Pro is turned off? One guy had a terrible beeping problem. Happened no matter what he did with his Mac. Mostly because his smoke alarm needed a fresh battery.

I see. But the point remains. That is unrelated to the MBP problem.

reader50, that one was funny… I had found a similar post on Apple Discussions boards
Apple - Support - Discussions - Loud beep from the MacPro ...

There is no beep (pause) beep (pause) beep once the Mac Pro is turned off.

rozwado1, I didn't see any glow red inside… am I supposed to shut it down or just put it to sleep?.

Simon, thanks. I understand it has nothing to do with the MBP issue.

I had bought the recent macupdate bundle which includes TechTool Pro, and I have AppleCare for this Mac Pro, but I haven't downloaded the TechTool Pro from AppleCare website cause with my über-slow ADSL it would take ages… The TechTool Pro from macupdate bundle is a mere 45 MBs (once most languages are removed), so the doubt arrises, does it differ from AppleCare's download? (besides not being bootable I guess).

TTP is sort of deceiving to say the least, I 'think' the beep beep might come from the power supply but of course TechTool Pro doesn't provide any tool to check anything besides the typical RAM, HDs and GPU… which BTW seem to be all OK.

While SMART check reports say all is fine, I feel my boot hard disk is slower than usual, to much activity to copy a mere file… might this mean it is going to Heaven? (cause it does not have sin) :-P

Could well be.

Simple rule of thumb with SMART: if it says the disk toast, get rid of the disk. If it says the disk is fine, it could still be toast.

Download SMART Utility and see what the values of the drive are. Samsungs aren't awfully reliable.

This is the info for the Samsung drive. It doesn't look any good at all, huh?

Post a screenshot of the attributes - just to be sure of what it's telling us...

Time Machine and Clone it just in case.
Seagate, WD Blue/Black - I'm a bit suspicious of the Green ones, which isn't brilliant as I have three... but they're all working for now.

It is testing Mac Pro second drive (WD). I'll post that screenshot about the Samsung once it is done with the WD.

How trusty SMART Utility is?, I have ran it on my MDD and it says both drivers are failing… :-/

This Smart Utility app looks like a GUI for the CLI smartctl app. I'm wondering though, can you configure the GUI to email you when your drive starts to fail like you can with smartmontools?

Unrelated to the original poster's question, but it would be cool to set up this sort of email notification on all family member computers.

If I'm reading that correctly, you have 1 bad sector and 2 'uncorrectable errors'

It's not terrible, but coupled with the short test read failure - get rid of it ASAP.

What does it say is wrong with the MDD? Power on hours?

This gets better… SMART Utility the Long offline test shows failure now as well.

As for the MDD's hard disks info, here is it, I haven't noticed anything slower there though…

Disk 1

Disk 2

Thank you very much.

I can't see such an option. Would be nice though.

Do you know what's annoying?, TechTool Pro runs the SMART test and it says everything is OK… AFAIK if I bring the Mac Pro to an Apple Service, TechTool Pro is the app they are going to run on it, right?

High reallocated sector count is one of the more worrisome indicators of impending failure.

Considering both drives are showing anomalies, I'd suggest you order replacement drives *now*. Then shut down, and leave both drives offline until you have replacement drives installed. Preserve their remaining hours for when you're ready to copy the data off.

It is perfectly possible that both drives will run for another year. But I'd rate it likely at least one will fail soon, with a low chance of losing both soon. Your data isn't worth the gamble, and you'll get a nice I/O speed boost from modern replacement drives.

Well, I have now the system installed onto the Western Digital and don't use the 'faulty' Samsung at all. I firstly thought the beep was gone but I still can hear it when I put the Mac Pro to sleep. :-/

I am not taking the Samsung out just in case I decide it is time for the Mac Pro to go to the Apple Care route.

Slide it out and see if it doesn't beep, it's easy enough on that machine...
