I want to run VPC 7 on my G5 - I have some system restore disks for a Sony Vaio of mine containing Win XP home. Is there a way to "extract" the Win XP to use with VPC so I can purchase the VPC without Windows since it is cheaper? I assume that I am a licensed Win XP home user since I bought the Vaio with XP on it (and on the restore disks) - yes?

It might work, as long as your install disk doesn't check to make sure that it is really installing on a Vaio. The other problem you will probably run into is that the install disk is probably going to try to install all the drivers that are appropriate for your Sony, which are no the ones that VPC wants to use. Without knowing how Sony makes their re-install disks I don't know if there is a way to get a "vanilla" XP install off of them. Some manufacturers make a "ghost" type image of the whole OS already installed, while some just script the install on top of the normal installation process.

Oh, and the other thing is that MS's "OEM" licenses that are purchased along with hardware are non-transferrable to new hardware, so technically you're screwed there too.

Oh well, that's what I was afraid of. I only wanted to take this route if I was indeed a registered user - which I wouldn't be on my G5. Thanks. VPC 7 with XP here I come.

System restore disks rarely, if ever, work on any hardware other than the machine they shipped with. Generally, they're BIOS locked installs, or it's a disk image sort of dealie. Either way, it's really unlikely that you could install this to VPC.
