Be prepared to wait a long time for the G5, Motorola can't even produce enough decent G4's at the moment, so the G5 is the last thing on their mind. They need to fix their yield problems now with a little help from IBM, because they have better manufacturing facilities. I would guess that we won't see a G5 untill somewhere in 2003.

I'd say the earliest a G5 chip would show up in one of Apple products would be late fall of 2002. Realistically, knowing Motorola's track record, I'd say the G5 won't show up until late spring or early summer of 2003.

If you need a computer, you better not wait for the G5 as you'll be waiting a long time. If you really want power, wait for Apple to release dual 733s hopefully this summer. Throw in Mac OS X and a SuperDrive and you'll be in heaven.

a pentium1 166 is far away from a..... a dual733 damn
one more question is the dual733 really workin on 1.4 Ghz then?
HOpe you guys are right and that the g5 will release not earlier than 2003 if i buy g4 i hope the g5 is not shipping earlier then 2003

a friend tells me (a huge apple freak works with it like 10 years) the g5 is going to release at the beginning of 2002 because the g4 will stop at 1 Ghz... he tells me

Is that the one with the telepathic UI and the anti-gravity pad? That machine's gonna kick ass.

MHz is just a measurment of the individual processor's performance. Other than x86 processors, to my knowledge there are no processors over 1GHz! None! And you know why? They don't need to be! They're able to surpass the speed of x86 processors by a hell of a lot just by being able to perform more calculations per cycle, and being able to perform them more efficently.

Sorry PCTek,
Rumor at AppleIncider makes it pretty clear that the G6 will go only in the 2002 "G6/Sphere."
Cubes will be phased out in favor of the new Spheres. And they will run only on Unleaded Premium. And all applications will have to be upgraded to compatible vaporware.

I wouldn't count o a G5 any time soon, for a few reasons (someone please correct me if I'm wrong here):

-the G5 is going to be a 64-bit processor, meaning that its integer and floating point units are going to handle 64 bits at a time, instead of 32 in all of today's processors. This is going to reqire complete re-writes of applications (including the OS) to take advantage of the speed. Considering that Apple is just finishing Mac OS X, I doubt they're going to dive head-first into a new, equally-large project like a 64-bit operationg sysstem.

-The G4 still has pleanty of life in it. I believe the next revision we should see is called "Apollo" or ther 7460. This is going to combine copper technology (believe it or not, today's G4's are aluminum), silicon-on-insulator technology (increasing performance or decreasing power consumption), longer pipelines (allows higher clock speeds), and some other goodies which will make the Photoshop folks shed tears of joy.

Ahem, actually the G3 and G4 processors are both 64bit RISC processors! The G5 is planed to be either 128 or even 256bit RISC. Apple may have already written OS X to be 128 or 256 bit, but I doubt it.

I've heard this new "It" invention by Dean Kamen is really a G10 (50G Mhz processor) with a 50" Cinema Display all for $59.99.

That's why Steve Jobs was so enthusiastic about it. And it's gotta be an Apple, because it only took Kamen 10 minutes to set up.

I believe you are mistaken:

http://e-www.motorola.com/webapp/sps/prod_cat/prod_summary.jsp?code=MPC7450&catId=M950644686128
The MPC7450 PowerPC microprocessor is a high-performance, low-power, 32-bit implementation of the PowerPC RISC architecture...
Sorry, but I'm certain (as are Motorola's engineers) that the G3 and G4 are 32-bit processors, as in their main integer and floating point units are 32-bit. Right now, the only processors that are 64-bit are high-end ones, like the Alpha 21264. Perhaps you are thinking of something else?

NO! The G6 is not a sphere! It's a pyramid, they ruled out the sphere in favor of stabler enviroments!

The thing I know now, is to never try to guess when Apple's gonna get and use a new chip...

Back in May 1999 a student of mine asked me when would the G4 arrive. I told him: "not before 1 to 2 years from now, they just got the NEW B&W G3 out"...
2 months later the G4 came out!

So we never know. They could be out this summer. It would be a good way to go back to IBM.
If IBM builds the G5 chips. BYE BYE Motorola!
