I bought a cheap PC monitor for my old GLOD iMac, thinking I'd use it for word-processing. I borrowed a Mac-VGA adapter from a friend, but when I hooked it all up and started up it wouldn't display properly. It seemed like they just wouldn't sync up somehow. I don't remember what I had set the iMac to, but pulling up the settings on the PC monitor showed it at 1280x1024 at 85 Hz. Booting off a CD didn't help either.

Is there any way I can set the resolution without seeing the screen? Do I need a newer adapter?

Does the adapter have settings? Did you try a PRAM reset on the iMac?

No settings on the adapter. I got an old Mac monitor from a friend so I could change the resolution, but I still couldn't get the VGA monitor working even though I changed the iMac to a setting with 85 Hz. Admittedly I didn't try 1280x1024 since that wasn't available for the monitor, but I did try various settings and could never get an image.

Not sure if resetting the PRAM would have any effect since it works with the Mac monitor...
