It must be me, but I find the game... somewhat disappointing, compared to SA. The printed map... white roads on a white-grey background... WTF were they smoking
|
I'm-a trying to wonder, wonder, wonder why you, wonder, wonder why you act so.

Man, compared to GTA:SA, the graphics in this one are absolutely stunning!! I mean, sure, water like that has been around in games for quite a while, but not in the GTA universe!

Same here. Good so far, but I'm gonna have to crash and continue in the morning.
I still really suck at driving in GTA games post GTA 2.

I'm secretly hoping that the game is good enough to play my 360 until it RRoDs.
(bought it Nov 2005 and I wouldn't mind getting the newer model with the HDMI port )

Am I the only one that doesn't see the gameplay being THAT different than Vice City? Plus, it's REAL dark. I had to crank the brightness on this game.

Hooboy, my status on amazon has gone from Items not yet shipped to Items shipping soon.
Oh, as a courtesy, we should probably use the spoiler tag for any single-player mission discussion, or any other very large discoveries (At least for the first month or so).
---
On a side note, nice to see you picked up the 360 version starman. As for the brightness, I know I had to crank it on Halo, so I wouldn't be surprised if I had to for this game.

For me, the volume of the dialogue is unduly low. No complaints, other than that (yet).

I turned on subtitles since it also translates Niko's speech when he's not speaking english.
One thing really annoys me about the game. The hand to hand combat controls are unbearably sluggish. I remember other GTA games being similar, though...

Ok, so the hand-to-hand problem isn't just me. I have to pop in Vice City and see how that was. I'm basing my opinion of IV on that.

The controls are really starting to frustrate me. And I hate not being able to turn your car while applying the brake.

I heard about that in a review. Sounds more like a limitation of poor car physics.

Uh oh. I was so psyched about GTA IV, but since I'll be waiting so long for a PC version, I'm going to have to hear about all of the faults of the game before I get it... It's not like that will deter me from getting it though... And they'll likely be fixed in the PC version anyways. But it'll ruin the excitement.

No, a PC version isn't announced. But I'm pretty confident it'll happen.
I love those comics maroma. They always had those in Stuff.

Well... This is what I get for holding strong to PC gaming. I must suffer when those certain games come out on consoles first. And when they get ported over with crappy performance... or Xbox menus... or ridiculous controls... or when they don't come out at all.
And though I'd like to, I can't justify buying a console for GTA IV.

Getting the hang of the controls, and the story is alright so far. Already got the "Warm Coffee" achievement and wasn't really trying to do it.

Interesting. From what I've read, the PS3 version has had a higher attach rate. Kind of makes sense when you recall that was the (company) system the game made a name for itself on.

Attach rate means out 10 PS3 owners, 6 buy GTA IV, while out of 10 360 owners, 4 buy GTA IV*
*fake numbers to illustrate the point
Edit: No modding from what I heard. Or at least severely reduced.

Just picked up the PS3 version here at lunch from Best Buy. They had a good supply of both from what I saw. No chance of a sell out there.

I heard there aren't many Pay 'n Spray's either. The only reason it was left was for legacy reasons.
I don't know how I feel about that.

Pretty awesome, eh?

My local Game Stop is not selling unless you pre-ordered. Checking online, some Best Buys still have some in stock, so I'll be making a trip there tonight.

Anecdotal evidence: at my local gamestop they went through stacks and stacks of the 360 version but only a handful of PS3 versions.
Guess that's not the norm, though.

after some quality time with GTA today my impressions are these.
Amazing graphics compared to the size of the city, The cover system is exactly what the series needed, Each car feels very different and no longer can you mash the accelerator to the floor and handbrake your way to safety ,Explosions are....explosive and very impressive, The story seems to start out very slow (no spoilers here) but picks up quickly (i guess this is to get acquainted with the game for new players and such), I have no multiplayer experience in but i'm excited to see what it brings to the table. All in all, after 5 hours of playing, just a marvel of gaming.

I think I read it in a semi-professional blog, so take it for what you will. I'm not married to the idea, but I find I could easily come up with reasons to justify which system got the higher attach rate. As if it really matters to me, anyway.

I'm enjoying the multiplayer, although no one wants to play ranked matches yet. The only thing I'm not too fond of is the match making system, its pretty whack. When you die in Cops n Crooks, you cant even talk to your team mates, you sit in silence watching the backs of their heads. Once you're in the game, it's REALLY fun, but I find people leave after the first round if they get destroyed, which sucks because you're faced with 1 minute loading screen to find another lobby.

So after playing some more i realized my style has changed from last gen GTA's, i use to be a "story gunner" (finish the story as soon as possible) then go back for all the extras, but GTA IV has me being more "completeness mindset" i find myself doing as many side missions as available before moving on to the next section. So whats everyones style, "story gunner", "complete", MIX, other?
side-note: dakar i'm sorry that your not able to play this yet, im sure if your half the GTA fan i think you are you will be overwhelmed with awesome experiences

I played about 4 hours last night and am really enjoying it. Driving definitely takes a while to get used to, but I feel I'm getting the hang of it. I like what they've done with the evading the police.
I've had a small issue with the cover system when it comes to doorways, but other than that, I agree that it's a very nice addition to the game.
@klb5090. In regards to story gunning or completing, I find myself more on the sandbox end of things while mixing in complete. I tend to drive around looking for stunts and just enjoying the huge map but then I'll phone someone or stop by someone for the odd mission, and that's slowly advancing me in the game.
