"Take On Me" is not cheesy! It's just a great song (with a great video).

Cheesy would be something like "The Goonies 'R' Good Enough" by Cyndi Lauper or "Too Shy" by Kajagoogoo. I think the latter may be my favorite.

I LOVE "One Night in Bangkok"!!! It is just totally awesome!

But "I Ran" is indeed cheezy, and so is "Final Countdown." Extra cheese!

I recently introduced my son to Dexy's Midnight Runners and their only hit, "Come on Eileen." Great pop, not cheezy. But boy did some groups make plenty of cheese in the '80s!!!

Def Leppard: Hysteria, Photograph, Animals (Great Clarke guitars!)

Johnny Hates Jazz: Foolish heart
Breathe: Hands to Heaven (awesome video too)

Chris De Burgh: lady in red

I was born in 1969, so for me 1982-85 was the Golden Age.

Among the albums I owned (on vinyl, of course):
Duran Duran "Seven and the Ragged Tiger" (The Reflex, New Moon on Monday)
Men at Work "Business as Usual" and "Cargo" (Who Can It Be Now?, Down Under, Overkill)
Flock of Seagulls "Flock of Seagulls" (I Ran, Space Age Love Song)
Toto "Toto IV" (this is the one I'm embarrassed to admit to today) (Rosanna, Africa)
... and, the piece de resistence ...
Thompson Twins "Into the Gap" (Hold Me Now, Doctor Doctor)

Good times.

Industry's "State of the Nation" which was their only hit

everything by Rick Astley (but they were so catchy)

i'm surprised there's no mention yet of Debbie Gibson, Tiffany (I Think We're Alone Now), Kylie Minogue (Locomotion), Tina Turner (What's Love Got to Do with It).

Pat Benatar's Hit Me With Your Best Shot is kinda cheesy but has a decent playcount on my iPod .

Well, it's cheesier than "Take On Me"! Then again, I guess the cheesiest thing is the video. Although, that part where it speeds up at the end counts. Don't get me wrong—it's a great song.

There is nothing embarrassing about Toto! A person who doesn't like "Rosanna" doesn't have a soul.

Current music (except pop nonsense) is ok... mostly.

The 80s just sucked IMO.
Oh, youngster... There is good music in every decade; you just have to find it. And what about turn-of-the-decade stuff? Off the Wall and the first single "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" were released in 1979, but "Rock With You" and all the other singles were released in 1980. Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus" hit in 1989, but "Enjoy the Silence" didn't become a hit until 1990. As far as dismissing all of the current "pop nonsense" goes, have you considered you're only hearing the "pop nonsense" of the 80s?

All good songs, but most are a little light on the cheese factor ("Karma Chameleon" and "The Reflex" excepted). "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" is my second-favorite 80s song (after "Don't Dream It's Over" of course) and I don't see anything cheesy about it.

I nominate this as the cheesiest line written in the 80s, possibly ever:

Two, of a billion stars, it means so much to me
Like a birthday or a pretty view
But then I'm sure that you know it's just for you

If you can't place it, you didn't listen to enough 80s music.

And for those of you who say the 80s sucked. You suck! The 80s were awesome. U2 was much better then, Prince kicked butt, I can't even name all of the great bands/music from the 80s.

Her name is Rio and she dances on the sand...

That reminds me I forgot to put my Decade album on my iPod .

I actually have two 80s playlists on my iPod (and "Rossana" is on both of them, so are "Come on Eileen" and "Walking on Sunshine"). It was a great time for music and music videos started being made. It's really just the big hair that I have issues with now .

Agreed. There is nothing cheesy about Songs From the Big Chair, it was the best album to come from the 80s.

My favorite pop cheese from the 80s?

"Danger Zone" by Kenny Loggins.

Mine: Rock the Cashbah- The clash.
I miss the days of the G5 and XPS Pentium 4 running side by side as high-end machines.

"Total Eclipse of the Heart" - Bonnie Tyler: can't say if I love it because of the high drama or because of the cheese--or both

"Oh Shelia!" - Ready for the World: gooey cheesy goodness

"Separate Ways" - Journey: Jonathan Cain and those effed up synths--ROCK SOFT!

--off the top of my head....
I am stupidest when I try to be funny.

I think we need to make a distinction here between the songs that are truly cheezy, and the songs that were just so overplayed at the time that we're sick of hearing them, even now. Remember that in the 80's, radio still mattered!

When I think of cheezy 80's stuff, I think of Wham, followed by a collection of Hair Metal power ballads. (They all sounded the same after a while.)

edit: Forgot all about "We Built This City". Pure cheddar.
